Loads of rubber ducks will swim for charity once they are dropped into
the waters off Huntington Beach Pier Saturday as the centerpiece of the
annual Duck-A-Thon.
Organizers of the popular fund-raiser, that has pulled in upward of
$70,000 in past years, expect to drop more than 3,000 of the rubber fowl
into the drink.
The event, in which spectators anxiously watch their duck "race"
toward the shoreline, kicks off at 1:30 p.m. Saturday with the "Mayors
Race." Last year, the city of Fountain Valley won the crown.
The main event, the public race, is set for 3 p.m. Saturday, with the
corporate race scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Businesses will be vying
for the coveted "Golden Duck" trophy.
The event raises funds for the Huntington Beach Community Clinic, a
medical center that provides care for low-income adults and children.
Organizers have set a goal to raise $100,000 this year for the clinic.
Anyone who purchases a duck can enter the race.
Ducks are regularly $10, $20 if you want one with a surfboard.
Corporate duck, which are bigger are $100 or $125 with the surfboard. The
ducks can be purchased on Saturday morning near the pier.
The event will also feature an open-air market and children's
activities.
