For the past three years, Edison has hosted the Orange County
Championships, and Marina was home to the Larry Doyle Memorial
Tournament, named after the school's late athletic director.
But this year, the schools have combined their tournaments, and
christened it the "Larry Doyle Memorial Orange County Championships."
In years past, Edison and Marina, rivals in Sunset League
competition, teamed up to stage one holiday tournament.
This year marks the first time in four years the two schools have
combined to co-hosted a holiday tournament.
"It figures to be an awesome tournament and is reflective of the
level of talent that Orange County girls' basketball has to offer,"
Marina coach Butch Fredlow said.
"I told [Edison coach] Corey [Kelly] that one thing I wanted to do
when we merged together once again was that I wanted to keep Larry
Doyle's name in the tournament title. Not only was Larry such a
strong supporter of athletics and academics, but he also was a strong
supporter of girls' athletics here at Marina."
The 16-team field includes some of the county's best: in addition
to the two host schools, highly regarded teams such as Troy, San
Clemente, Mater Dei and Rosary will vie for the tournament title.
In addition, non-county teams South and North Torrance highs, Hart
of Newhall, Valencia of Valencia, and Pomona, will be in the field.
Edison begins tournament play today at 2 p.m. against Pacifica. At
6:30 p.m., Marina battles Mater Dei.
On Monday at Edison, the consolation final is set for 5 p.m., and
the championship final at 8 p.m.
