Rain doesn't slow Seahawks

Rain washed out the debut Friday of the Ocean View High baseball team, but the Seahawks doubled up on Saturday to win a pair of games in the Foothill Division of the Newport Elks Tournament.

First, Ocean View took care of visiting Newport Harbor, 4-3. Jason Walker pitched 5 1/3 innings of shutout relief and struck out eight in the process. Nick McIsaac came up with the game-winning hit on offense as he singled home James Miller with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory.

James Kang also had a productive game offensively for the Seahawks with a solo home run and double.

Ocean View followed that one-run win with a 3-1 decision over host La Quinta, which entered the season ranked third in CIF-Southern Section Division III.

James Kang pitched a complete game two-hitter and the bat of Kyle Hughes proved to be the difference in the game when it produced a two-out, bases-clearing double off of the right field fence in the top of the seventh.

The two wins gave Shane Borowski a successful start to his coaching career at Ocean View, which began with Saturday's games.

"It was a long day for the coaches and the players," Borowski said of Saturday's doubleheader. "With all of the rain, we had to get both of our fields ready to get as many games in as possible, for all three levels. Add that to an extra inning game followed by a quick bus trip to La Quinta and it could have spelled disaster.

"But our kids were prepared and played with a lot of heart. They could have quit several times in either game, but hung in there and when the chips were down, they produced. It was a great team effort in both games."
