Mixed bag for Oilers

Huntington Beach continues play this week at Laguna Hills Tournament.

Derek Rosas powered the Oilers offense with 10 goals. Nick Refice, Benny Nguyen and Pat Sorvino scored goals, Jeff Hennes tallied six consecutive face-off wins, goalie Vito Beato had five saves, and defenseman Chase Duquette added a team-best 10 ground balls.

In a previous nonleague match at Capistrano Valley High, Huntington fell to the host Cougars, 15-8. Sam Clarke and Ryan Tully each scored twice, and Hennes, Rosas and Sorvino each scored once.

In track and field

Huntington launched its 2007 season with great success, as the boys' and girls' squads traveled to Palmdale and each placed first at the Herb Wyre Invitational that was held in high winds.

The boys, coached by Rick Glenn, were led by Finau Fisaeu and Johnny Olive in the throws, Trevor Carroll, Josh Smith and Kamal Singh on the track, and Taylor Wright and Evan Sebastian in the jumps.

The girls' team, coached by Kim Clarke, was led by Veronica Franco, Chelsea Coates, Kaitlyn Hybl and Amanda Clifford in the running events. Allison Kroessal and Krissy VanDoornum took first and second in the pole vault.

In their most recent outing, Huntington's boys edged El Modena, 64-63, and the girls lost, 75-43, to the Vanguards.

Notable finishes for the Oilers boys included Singh winning the 1,600 meters (4 minutes 34.5 seconds), Stephen Gabbard capturing both the shot put (52 feet 7) and discus (154-6) and the 4X4 relay team of Smith, Wright, Gabe Terases and Trevor Carroll winning in 3:31.1.

In the shot put, Jake Galpin (49-3) and Fisaeu (47-7 3/4 ) finished behind Gabbard.

For the Oilers girls, Bonnie Sorensen won the long jump (17-5 3/4 ) and triple jump (34 3/4 ), and Laura Boggeln captured the shot put (36-0).

In surfing

Huntington, led by senior team captain Logan Strook, will be out to capture a second consecutive National Scholastic Surfing Assn. title this weekend at Church Beach, Trestles.

The Oilers, who compete Saturday and Sunday, went undefeated in Sunset League competition.
