Locals shine at O.C. games

Several area athletes garner top 10 finishes at Mission Viejo High.

Marina led from start to finish Monday in disposing of Fountain Valley, 6-1, in Sunset League play. Sophomore Paul Strong got the win.

Edison completed a three-game sweep of Esperanza in Sunset League play by posting a 9-2 victory Saturday. Kyle Higashioka hit a home run and double, and Ryan Sheeks, Brent Meschuk and Michael Kuehn all doubled.

Sophomore right-hander Kurt Heyer gave up four hits in a complete-game victory as the Chargers maintained first-place.

Huntington Beach scored all of its runs over the final three innings to rally for an 8-5 win over host Trabuco Hills in Sea View League action. Junior Calvin Drummond got the win, and junior Derek Neugebauer the save for the Oilers.

In softball

Huntington Beach scored in the top of the first inning of its Sea View League contest at Woodbridge and made the run stand in a 1-0 victory. Courtney Dial went three for three to account for three of the Oilers' four hits. The other belonged to Kara Rutkin.

Amanda Horowitz went the distance and gave up five hits and struck out four.

In lacrosse

Huntington Beach assaulted the nets for 75 shots and came away with a 14-5 victory over host Trabuco Hills in Sea View League play on a cold, rainy night Friday.

Ryan Tully scored four goals and had two assists, Sam Clarke scored three goals, Benny Nguyen had two goals and two assists, Jeff Hennes and Nick Refice each scored twice, Shayne Thomas had a goal and two assists, and Yuki O'Brien scored once.

Wyatt Fullmer recorded nine saves.
