Quick start leads to easy win

Hockey: Panthers score first five goals to beat Hornets, 8-2, in Smythe Division play.

The Panthers bolted to a quick lead Monday in their Smythe Division match against the Hornets to post an 8-2 victory at Coast 2 Coast Inline Hockey Center in Huntington Beach.

The Panthers led, 3-0, after one period and built a 5-0 lead before the Hornets cracked the scoreboard.

Garrett Zolg scored three times and Jake Shaylor twice to lead the Panthers in scoring. Single goals went to Jordan Reichenbach, Ryan Beardshear and Tyler Beardshear. Zolg and Shaylor each added a pair of assists and Ryan Beardshear had one assist.

Alvin Do recorded 29 saves.

Brayden Moore and Scott Begg scored for the Hornets. Stephen Kim had an assist and Cara Grant had 19 saves.

? Wales Division

Cyclones 6, Bruins 5: Ethan Higbee registered three goals, the last of which capped the scoring for the Cyclones, who edged the Bruins. Higbee scored back-to-back goals in the second period, as the Cyclones took a 5-4 lead into the final period.

Two of Higbee’s scores were set up by Andrew Huffman, the third by William Huffman.

Andrew Huffman also scored two goals, one of which was assisted by Higbee, and Stuart Urbano also scored. Higbee and William Huffman each finished with two assists. Jessica Quinones recorded 20 saves.

Christopher Kao and Ricky Meyer both scored twice to top the Bruins offensively. Cody Crujido scored the other goal. Kao, Michael Borrego, Logan Bechtold and Alec Lang had assists and Kyle Aube had 23 saves.

? Mite Division

99s 7, 2000s 6: The 99s held off a late charge by the 2000s to get the victory. The 2000s scored five of their six goals in the final period, but couldn’t catch the 99s.

Blake Luevano scored three goals and Dylan Reightley scored twice to pace the 99s. Both also had an assist.

Kameron Christi had 19 saves.

Owen Osborne scored three goals, Andrew De Carlo scored twice and Jackson Wozniak had one goal for the 2000s. Ian Gibbons had two assists and Wozniak and Noah Gealy each had an assist.

Tyler Gealy finished with 27 saves.
