All-star football game set for Friday
The 50th annual Brea Lions Orange County North-South Prep All-Star Football Game is set for 7:15 Friday night at Orange Coast College, and six locals are on the South roster.
USC-bound defensive end Will Andrews, Saddleback-bound linebacker/fullback Matt Reza and OCC-bound center/right tackle Bryce Brantley, all of Edison, will play. So will Fountain Valley linemen Andy Palacios and Awwad Yasin, as well as linebacker Artie O’Keefe.
“I’m really excited,” Brantley said. “Very few people get to do this and I’m honored to be one of them. It’s fun. It’s going to help prep everyone for the next level.”
Snyder invited to USA team trials
Eric Snyder, a junior-to-be center fielder at Edison High, has been invited to the USA Baseball Under-18 team trials, to take place in Cary, N.C. in September.
Snyder earned the invite after completing at the 17th annual Tournament of Stars, presented by Major League Baseball, also in Cary.
“It was a great experience, a great time,” Snyder said. “It was probably the best experience I’ve had in baseball. I just really worked hard.”
Following evaluation during the trials, a final 20-player 18U national team roster will be selected Sept. 17. The team will compete in the Pan American Junior Championships in Venezuela, beginning Sept. 25.
Last summer, Snyder competed at the 16U team trials.
“It’s a huge difference [competing in under-18s],” Snyder said. “It’s a wood bat. I think I’m the fourth-youngest kid [invited]. I just work with what I’m given and really push myself.”
Chad Lewis, a third baseman who will be a senior at Marina High, is an alternate for the trials.
Lindquists tie for ninth
Ocean View High alums and Huntington Beach residents Katie and Tracy Lindquist finished tied for ninth place over the weekend at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Coney Island Open in Brooklyn.
The Lindquist sisters split $3,960 as they tied for ninth for the fifth time this season.
Huntington Beach resident Saralyn Smith, teamed with Beth Van Fleet, finished tied for 17th.
On the men’s side, Huntington resident Ed Ratledge and partner Ryan Mariano also finished tied for ninth. Former Golden West College standout Jeff Carlucci tied for 25th with partner Jonathan Acosta.
The AVP Tour next returns to Southern California for the Manhattan Beach Open, which begins July 16
