Man charged with attempted murder

Shawn Michael Espinoza of Garden Grove, suspected of Huntington Beach shooting, to be arraigned Friday

A police investigation uncovered the identity and led to the arrest of a Garden Grove man suspected of attempted murder.

Shawn Michael Espinoza, 39, was arrested Dec. 10 in connection with a Dec. 2 attempted murder and robbery incident, officials said. He is charged with one felony count each of attempted murder, use of a firearm, second-degree attempted murder and street terrorism, according to court documents. He is expected to be arraigned at 8:30 a.m. Friday in courtroom W-15 at the West Justice Center.

Espinoza is believed to have confronted a male victim outside his Huntington Beach house around 10 p.m. Espinoza allegedly demanded the man’s wallet, stating he owed somebody money, according to the Huntington Beach Police Department.

When the man refused, Espinoza is believed to have shot the man in the leg once and fled. Officers checked the area at the time of the incident and were unable to locate the shooter. Through an investigation, officials believe Espinoza is the unidentified shooter, according to the department.

Huntington Beach detectives located Espinoza and obtained an arrest warrant for him in Garden Grove. The Huntington Beach SWAT team was used to search for him, and detectives arrested him Dec. 10.

He is being held at the Theo Lacy Facility for more than $1 million bail.
