But the Chargers were blanked in the second game of the tournament, 4-0, against Aliso Niguel. After falling into the consolation bracket, Edison defeated Santa Margarita on Tuesday and has a seventh-place semifinal game at 3 p.m. today at home against La Mirada.
Coach Steve Lambright said his team will be taking it one game at a time.
“I’m very proud, as the head coach, to be considered one of the top teams not just in the state, but in the nation,” Lambright said. “That’s a tribute to how far the program’s come along. But, I want to be No. 1 at the end of the season.”
He also said Edison shouldn’t feel pressure this year.
“People who don’t prepare feel pressure. What happens is the bulls-eye gets big and we’re going to get everyone’s ‘A’ game. Everyone’s going to want to knock us off, and our schedule is very, very challenging this year.”
The Vikings, who made it to the Division I quarterfinals last year, won their first two games of the Loara Tournament by topping Artesia, 6-0, behind a standout pitching performance from Kevin Stoops. They also won Saturday, 16-9, but fell in the next game Tuesday against El Toro, 6-4, despite a three-run homer by Cody Springer.
Marina has a consolation game today at Millikan.
The Barons lost their first game of the Loara Tournament to La Mirada but came back strong. They defeated University, 6-4, on Monday and Katella, 8-0, on Tuesday. Zac Milian got the win in the latter game and Turner Clouse hit a two-run home run.
Fountain Valley plays at Long Beach Wilson today in a consolation bracket semifinal.
The Oilers, who reached the CIF Southern Section Division II title game last year, are playing at the Newport-Elks Tournament.
In the Lemur Bracket, Huntington lost to Orange Lutheran, 8-6, and Mission Viejo, 11-3, in opening action over the weekend. But the Oilers rebounded to top Hemet, 4-3, in the third round Monday to finish 1-2 in their pool.
Huntington’s David Vandoornum drove in Jake Porter with the winning run in the seventh, capping a two-out, nobody on rally. Kevin Klaess got the win in relief.
The Oilers had a game Wednesday in the consolation bracket at home against Corona.
The Seahawks are also playing at the Newport-Elks Tournament in the Foothill bracket. They fell to Troy in their opener, 9-4, before squeezing out a 7-6 victory against Carter on Saturday.
Colton Johnson was two for three, scored three runs and got the win for Ocean View. Ocean View lost to Corona del Mar, 12-7, on Tuesday and hosts Pacifica in a consolation game today.
