Build a sandcastle
The 49th annual Sandcastle Contest at Corona del Mar State Beach is taking place from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Anyone can participate. Just form a team, or go down and see some of the best in sand sculptors from children to professional architects. There's fun, entertainment and cash prizes. Here's what it costs to compete: masters (architecture firms) $60; businesses (all other businesses) $40; others (youth groups, civic groups, clubs, etc.) $30. Each team will receive eight Sandcastle T-shirts, and additional shirts will be sold at the event for $10 each. The beach is at Marguerite Avenue and Ocean Boulevard in Corona del Mar. Gala fundraiser for the kids
Costa Mesa-based Kids of Kilimanjaro, founded by George Namkung, is a nonprofit providing a warm school lunch to 13,000 children in Tanzania. Its fifth annual gala fundraiser Oct. 8 will be at The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Coast. The incredible silent auction includes items such as Jimmy Choo sunglasses, a John Varvatos tailored suit, a one-week stay in Mammoth and jewelry from the Passionate Collector. The live auction includes a Lakers package, a two-night stay in a four-bedroom villa at Pelican Hill and a private dinner for 16 at AnQi. Tickets cost $250.
