The Marina High girls' golf team completed a perfect Sunset League season Oct. 20 by defeating Huntington Beach, 213-253.

The league finale was rained out Oct. 19 and played Oct. 20 on the opening day of the Sunset League finals at Lakewood Golf Course.

The Vikings earned the league championship for the second time in four years. The program's junior varsity team also won a league title.

"This has been a fun season and it has been rewarding for me to see the team improve as the season went on," Marina Coach Jim Morris said. "Every match, it seemed, that one or two players were shooting their low for the season or for their career. It is a season that I wish would go on forever, and I'm glad to have been a part of it."

Marina was led by sophomore Haley Wian at 40, senior Halle Young at 41 and junior Mackenzie McCollum at 42 on the par 37 front nine. The 213 score was the best team score of the season for the Vikings, who ended league play 10-0 and went 14-4 overall during the regular season.

Young, Wian and senior Casey Kang will represent the Vikings at the CIF Individual Tournament that begins Monday at El Dorado Golf Course in Long Beach. Also advancing from league to the tournament is Sally Kim of Fountain Valley, Jamie Harada and Vanessa Honnes of Edison and league individual champion Esther Lee of Los Alamitos.

Marina begins play today in the CIF Team Divisional playoffs at Jurupa Hills Golf Course in Riverside. Edison and Fountain Valley also are representing the Sunset League in the team playoffs.
