Staying active with winter classes

Students young and older can learn fencing, painting and more through Sands Community Services Guide.

The days are still short and school is back in session, but that doesn't mean the fun has to end.

The city of Huntington Beach offers children, teens, adults and seniors classes to fulfill any interest, and winter classes are just getting started. Here is a list of some standout offerings, but for the full class schedule and information, check out the Sands Community Services Guide at


Art: Preschool Picassos

The class, for children 3 to 5 years old, will teach tots how to make collages, prints, sculptures, drawings and paintings. Children will create a work of art to bring home at every lesson. The art class requires parent participation. The class is offered in three sessions for $35 each and a $10 materials fee.


Buttons & Bows Etiquette Class

An etiquette class for children 2 to 4 and a half years old. The youngsters will learn how to interact politely with others through etiquette games, play-acting and other activities. They will also learn traditional customs and table manners. The class is $45 and offered in two sessions.


Culinary Kids: Kids in the Kitchen

Children will learn to experiment in the kitchen as they learn to cook. The class is for children 5 to 12 years old. The class is offered in two sessions during the winter for $175. There is also a $40 materials fee.

Mad Science

Kids can learn straight from a mad scientist how electricity works and what's up with optical illusions with hands-on experiments. The class is offered during three sessions for children 5 to 12 years old. It is $89 plus a $10 materials fee.


Cake Decorating

The class will go over the basics of cake-decorating, including colorings, borders, stars and roses. The four-week class is offered at three different levels throughout the winter. The first course is open to those 12 and older, and the second and third class is open to those 13 and older. The class is $50, not including materials.

Fencing: Beginning

Teens 14 and older and adults can learn the art of fencing in one of three four-week classes. Participants will learn basic footwork, attacks, defense and the strategy behind fencing. The class is $50 with a $10 fee to use the protective gear.


Chair Yoga for Seniors

Residents 50 and older can learn how to do yoga in a chair whether at home, in the office or traveling. The class is designed for all levels and is offered for one session. It is $60 for the nine-week class.

Computers: Photo Organizing & More

Older adults will be taught how to do basic photo editing, organize pictures and share them online. Seniors will use Google's free Picasa program to organize, edit and share photos. The class is $6 with a suggested donation of $10 at the first lesson. It is offered in three sessions over the winter.
