Local teams ranked in season's final week
The Edison girls' basketball and boys' soccer teams continue their stranglehold in their respective CIF Southern Section rankings, with the girls' soccer team No. 1 in the Division 1A poll and the undefeated boys' soccer team leading the Division 1 rankings.
In girls' basketball, Huntington Beach is ranked third in Division 2AA, Ocean View No. 14 in Division 4AA and Brethren Christian is fourth in Division 5A.
In boys' basketball, Edison remained No. 4 and Huntington Beach is No. 12 in the Division 2AA poll, Fountain Valley rose from 14th to No. 13 in Division 1A and Brethren Christian is tied for the No. 5 spot with Renaissance Christian in Division 5A.
In girls' water polo, Edison is eighth and Fountain Valley No. 9 for the second straight week in the Division 1 poll.
Locals second at NSSA event
Derek Peters and Shaun Thompson, both of Huntington Beach, earned second-place finishes in their respective divisions Feb. 3 at the sixth contest of the National Scholastic Surfing Assn. Southwest Open Season at the Huntington Beach Pier.
Peters nearly won the Open Men's division but finished second to Parker Coffin of Santa Barbarab who won the event with a two-wave average score of 14.10. Peters had a score of 13.44.
Thompson scored an 11.70 and placed second to Dane Peterson (12.76) of Trabuco Canyon in the Open Longboard division, where Nathan Thompson (7.57) of Huntington Beach was fourth.
