The Fountain Valley Twins completed the first round of Majors Division play in first place with a 7-3 record, thanks to a 6-3 victory Saturday over the Westminster Padres.
Shane McCarthy had a two-run double to open the scoring in the second inning but the Twins trailed, 3-2, entering the bottom of the fifth. There, Garrett Gilmore hit his second double of the game and Mark Volkert's bunt single put runners at the corners before McCarthy's single scored Gilmore. Volkert scored on Brian Allen's single, Jon Kerchenfaut singled home McCarthy and Simon Costa drove in Allen, to put the Twins in front, 6-3.
Riley Hanson struck out the three Padres he faced in the sixth to complete the comeback win and record his first complete game of the season. He gave up two earned runs on five hits and two walks to go along with nine strikeouts, fanning six batters of the final three innings.
