Marina's Glore repeats as singles champ

Boys' tennis player is again best in Sunset League

Edison aquatics reigns supreme in league, as does Fountain Valley's boys' track and field program.

Parker Glore repeated as singles champion and teammates Roy Nielsen and Toma Harmelink took the doubles crown on the final day of the Sunset League boys' tennis championships May 4.

The singles and doubles finals were an all-Marina affair. In the singles finale, Glore, Marina's top singles player, defeated No. 2 Kevin Young. Nielsen and Harmelink, the No. 1 team for the Vikings, turned back Marina's No. 2 team of Jason Fernandez and Josh Kligor, to take the doubles title.

Marina opened CIF team tournament play Wednesday at home against San Clemente. The result wasn't available by press time.


Boys' Golf

Los Alamitos, which won the regular season Sunset League championship, also captured the league's tournament title when the two-day event wrapped up May 5 at Lakewood Country Club. Marina finished second to the Griffins in both the regular season and at the league tournament.


Jesse Heinrichs of Marina had a career-low of 67 (five under par) on the final day of the tournament, to finish in second place. Heinrichs' score tied a Marina record for an 18-hole event, Vikings Coach Jim Morris said.

Los Alamitos, Marina and Newport Harbor represented the Sunset League at the CIF Central Team Divisionals on Monday at Lakewood Country Club. The top three teams, Los Alamitos, Brea Olinda and Mira Costa, advanced from Monday's divisional to compete at Thursday's CIF Team Championships at Mission Lakes Country Club in Desert Hot Springs.

The Southern Individual Regional is at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach at 7 a.m. Monday. CIF qualifiers from the Sunset League are Heinrichs, Andre Vu of Fountain Valley, John Lee, Conner Campbell and Jonathan Young of Los Alamitos and Carter Norris and Zach Eddy of Newport Harbor. League alternates are Jacob Schulze of Huntington Beach and Marcus Kiel of Newport Harbor.


Boys' Volleyball

Edison, Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley and Ocean View saw their respective seasons come to a close this week in the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

In Division 1 first-round action Tuesday ), Edison (Sunset League No. 2) lost in five games to Alemany (Mission No. 3), 25-23, 24-26, 25-23, 20-25, 15-17, and Huntington Beach (Sunset No. 3) fell in three games at Trinity League runner-up Mater Dei, 25-16, 25-16, 25-20.

In Division 3 first-round play Tuesday, Ocean View (Golden West No. 3) lost in three games to host Olympic League champ and No. 2-ranked Valley Christian, 25-13, 25-15, 25-21.
