The first time Calvin Saxton went surfing, he thought of it as a simple diversion.
"It was really fun," Calvin said, remembering the day he was 4 and his father set him on the water. "He pushed me onto a wave and just told me to stand up."
The Newport Beach resident, now a sixth-grader at Newport Heights Elementary School, discovered a new hobby that day. Later, he came to see it as a cure as well.
Calvin, 11, has battled asthma all his life, and the sea air helps to soothe his lungs. This weekend, he'll use his love of surfing — not to mention his artistic skills — to benefit people with a graver condition than his.
A year ago, Calvin launched Kid Creature, a charity T-shirt company that raises funds to fight cystic fibrosis. His latest design, featuring a three-headed orange monster, will be given to every team leader and offered as a raffle prize at the Great Strides walk in Huntington Beach.
