Huntington police conducting DUI checkpoint Saturday

July 14, 2011

The Huntington Beach Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint at 9 p.m. Saturday, Lt. Russell Reinhart said.

Reinhart said the department would not reveal the specific location in advance.

Funding for the checkpoint program was provided by a grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A recent report from the state office showed that Huntington Beach ranked first among California cities of its size in per-capita alcohol-related traffic collisions in 2009.

"The goal of the Huntington Beach Police Department is to prevent the number of serious injury and fatal collisions," the department said in a release. "The sobriety checkpoint allows officers to intervene by arresting DUI drivers prior to them becoming involved in a crash. Impaired driving puts everyone on the road in danger, and we are doing everything we can to ensure that motorists have a safe place to live and drive."
