H.B. man charged with hit-and-run

A Huntington Beach man pleaded not guilty Monday for an alleged hit-and-run that resulted in the death of a bicyclist.

Adam Carl Garrett, 19, is charged with one felony count of hit-and-run causing death and one misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence, according to the Orange County district attorney's office. Garrett, who is out on $50,000 bail, faces a maximum sentence of four years in state prison if convicted.

His pretrial was set for 8:30 a.m. Oct. 4 at the West Justice Center in Westminster.

Garrett allegedly crashed into 25-year-old Hung Khac Do, who was riding his bike about 3 a.m. May 15 along Warner Avenue in Fountain Valley, according to prosecutors.

The impact threw Do off his bike, landing him in the far right lane of Warner.

Garrett then allegedly fled the scene to his Huntington Beach home, which was only four miles away, leaving Do without assistance, prosecutors said. He is accused of calling 911 around 3:20 a.m. to falsely report the accident.

Do was transported to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, where he succumbed to his injuries 40 minutes later.
