December 14, 2011

One person was transported to the hospital with minor injuries and two families were displaced Wednesday after a fire broke out on the second level of an apartment building in Huntington Beach, said Deputy Fire Marshal Jeff Lopez.

A man was injured while trying to put the fire out using a fire extinguisher. Two other people were injured but were not taken to the hospital, Lopez said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation on Wednesday.

Firefighters responded to the fire at the three-story Harbour Lights Apartments, 4352 Pickwick Circle, around 10 a.m. The blaze was under control by 10:43 a.m.

The fire began in the kitchen of the apartment on the second floor and extended to the unit right above it, Lopez said. Both units were damaged, based on firefighters' early assessment.

Smoke filled the second and third level of the apartment building, leading firefighters to evacuate all residents. All except for the ones in the damaged units were back in their homes by 1 p.m. Wednesday.
