Area teams impressive early on in league

Edison and Marina collected Sunset League victories and Ocean View launched its 2012 Golden West League campaign with a big win in girls' soccer action Tuesday.

Edison evened its Sunset mark at 1-1 and improved to 10-5-1 after shutting out visiting Fountain Valley, 3-0. Courtney Maddox scored one goal and had an assist, Mackenzie Cerda netted her 13th goal of the season and Angelisa Cortez closed out the scoring. Alison Jahansouz recorded the shutout with one save.

"We played a very consistent game and it was a great answer to our (Jan. 5) loss to Newport Harbor," Edison Coach Kerry Crooks said. "Our defense was solid and our offense produced 22 shots."

Marina was a 3-1 winner over visiting Newport Harbor. Kayla Perry and Diana Schwene each had a goal and assist, Sydney McCollum scored once, Emily Vanasse had an assist and Arianna Sisson recorded 10 saves for the Vikings, who went to 1-1 in league play and handed the Sailors (1-1) their first league loss.


In another Sunset matchup, Huntington Beach fell, 3-1, at Los Alamitos. Laura Lainson scored for the Oilers, who are 1-1 in league. Los Alamitos is the Sunset leader at 2-0.

In league openers Jan. 5, Huntington beat Fountain Valley, 4-2, Marina was edged, 2-1, by Los Alamitos and Edison fell, 1-0, to Newport Harbor.

In the Oilers' win over the Barons, Halie Bergeron, Jordan Bradley, Carolyn Archer and Dottie Rhoten scored goals. Rhoten also collected a pair of assists and Bradley had one assist. Brianna Mojica scored in the second half off an assist from Senna Brennan in Marina's loss at Los Alamitos.

Ocean View started Golden West League play impressively as the 11-3-1 Seahawks, ranked fourth in CIF Division 6, blanked host Westminster, 3-0. Senior Aleanna Vargas scored twice, freshman Sam Romo scored once and freshman Malia Hayes had five saves.

Previously, Ocean View returned to action after a 2 1/2-week hiatus and dropped a 2-0 nonleague game to visiting Laguna Beach on Jan. 5. Hayes had 14 saves.

Thursday's girls' soccer schedule has Ocean View hosting Orange at 3:15 p.m., Edison at Huntington Beach at 5 p.m. and Fountain Valley at Marina at 7 p.m.


Boys' Soccer

The Sunset League race got underway last week and Fountain Valley picked up two big road wins in two days.
