  • MONDAY: The city of Huntington Beach and several veterans groups host a Memorial Day ceremony at Pier Plaza, Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway. The event starts at 11 a.m. and includes a speech by Col. Gregory D. Lautner, brigade commander of the 6th Recruiting Brigade, as well as a rifle salute and a performance by the Huntington Beach High School Band. Admission is free. 'Chair Portraits and Other Subjects'

The OMC Gallery for Contemporary Arts, 7561 Center Ave., No. 32, Huntington Beach presents a photo exhibit by Djani Ivancevic "Chair Portraits and Other Subjects." Countdown to Retirement

The Countdown to Retirement workshop is offered by the Huntington Beach Adult School from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays until June 5. This three-session workshop will cover Social Security planning for boomers, navigating Medicare, creating an income stream in retirement and avoiding the five biggest mistakes retirees make. West Coast Artists

"Contemporary Traditionalists: A West Coast Perspective," a show featuring 48 works by 18 South Orange County artists, runs at the Huntington Beach Art Center, 538 Main St. Among the artists on display are Scott Albert, Paul Cheng, Susan Jarecky, Casey Parlette and Bradford J. Salamon. There is an opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. May 19 and regular gallery hours are noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, noon to 6 p.m. Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. Benefit Car Show

The Animal Assistance League of Orange County hosts "Show-Down," a benefit for abused and abandoned cats and dogs, at the Newland Barn, 19822 Beach Blvd., Huntington Beach. The event lasts from 1 to 5 p.m. and includes a chili cook-off, a raffle, a silent auction, beer and wine tastings and chocolate and cheese tastings, plus a performance by singer Phil Shane. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door and include a sample of each chili and 10 tasting tickets; children 12 and younger are $10, which includes a kids meal.
