Heyer, Wildcats win College World Series

Edison High graduate Kurt Heyer (2009), a pitcher for the University of Arizona baseball team, helped lead the Wildcats to the 2012 College World Series title. Arizona captured its fourth CWS title and first since 1986 on Monday by defeating two-time defending-champion South Carolina, 4-1, in Omaha. The Wildcats swept the Gamecocks in the best-of-three finals.

Heyer, a junior right-hander, threw the first nine-plus innings for the Wildcats in their tournament opener June 15, a 4-3 victory in 12 innings over Florida State. He also threw 7 1/3 innings and got the victory June 21 when the Wildcats defeated the Seminoles a second time, 10-3, to advance to the best-of-three finals.

Heyer led the nation in victories and finished the year 13-2. He was named Friday to the second team on Baseball America's 2012 College All-America Team. Earlier this month, he was taken in the sixth round of the Major League First-Year player draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Arizona (48-17) went 10-0 in postseason play in sweeping through regional, Super Regionals and CWS action.

Heyer's Edison teammate, Eric Filia-Snyder, and Huntington Beach High grad Beau Amaral, played with UCLA at the CWS. The Bruins (48-16) went 1-2 in the tournament and were eliminated last week. One of their two losses was a 4-0 shutout against Arizona on June 17.

The Wildcats and Bruins had tied for the 2012 Pac-12 Conference title and both had two victories against the other during the season.

West swims first Trials event

Steve West of Huntington Beach swam his first event, the men's 100-meter breaststroke, Monday at the U.S. Olympic Trials for men's swimming in Omaha.

West, who at 40 is the oldest male at the U.S. Olympic Trials, turned in a time of 1 minute, 3.90 seconds in the second of 15 heats for the event, and had an overall finish of 61st place. He was 3.61 seconds behind the winner of the event, John Criste, who won in 1:00.29.

West will swim his second event at the Trials, the men's 200-meter breaststroke, Thursday.

Handball tournament underway

The 2012 United States Handball Assn.'s National Four-Wall Championships is underway at Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley. Top players from around the world, including six-time U.S. national champion and the top-ranked player Paul Brady of Ireland, are in the competition, which started Tuesday.

The Men's Open final is at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The Women's Open final is 9 a.m. Sunday. Amateur matches are open to the public at no cost.
