Oilers win linemen competition

The Huntington Beach High football team got a boost from its linemen prior to the start of the 2012 season by winning the 23rd annual Fountain Valley Lineman Competition on July 18 at Fountain Valley High. Host Fountain Valley finished in fifth place.

Teams competed in six events — bench press, power clean, truck push, hurdle relay, Ironman relay and tug-of-war — and Huntington finished first or second in each competition, Oilers Coach Eric Lo said. The Oilers took first in both relay competitions and the truck push. They finished second to St. John Bosco, which was second to Huntington in the team standings, in the bench press and power clean.

La Habra finished third in the team standings. Lo said Huntington finished fourth at the event last year, and was third in 2010.

The tournament ended the summer session for both the Oilers and Barons.

"I thought our guys did a great job," Lo said of winning the competition. "We have some very strong guys up front who are very talented."

"Our guys did real well in a few events," Fountain Valley Coach John Shipp said. "This (tournament) is a great way for these guys to blow off some steam, instead of going up against and hitting each other all the time. It was a good competition."

Both Huntington and Fountain Valley start camp for the 2012 season Aug. 6. The Oilers open the season Aug. 23 by taking on El Toro at Trabuco Hills High. The Barons make their season debut Aug. 24 hosting Foothill at Huntington Beach High.

Boys' Basketball

Ocean View completed summer tournament play July 22 at Concordia University where the Seahawks went 3-1. Guards Josh Mishler (senior) and Kendall Small (sophomore) led the way and Seahawks Coach Tim Walsh said that senior guard Nathan Kosai provided a spark at both ends of the court.

"Kosai has had a great summer," Walsh said. "We've played our best when he has been on the floor. He hasn't scored a bunch of points, but done everything else to help us be successful."

Fountain Valley ended its summer season by winning the Bolsa Grande summer league title. The Barons also competed at the UC San Diego Tournament and placed second in its pool before going 2-0 on the final day of the tournament.

"The team has made some good strides this summer playing some very good competition," Barons Coach Roger Holmes said. "Hopefully, this will carry over and has helped us to get ready for the next season."

Huntington Beach finished second at the Cypress Tournament. The Oilers defeated Loara, Sunny Hills and El Toro to reach the final, where they fell to Mater Dei.
