Marina, Huntington Beach and Los Alamitos carried the torch for the Sunset League on opening day of the two-day Sunset League vs. Pacific Coast League Challenge on Tuesday, and only one of those teams, Huntington, claimed victory.

The Oilers capped the three-game schedule at the Huntington Beach High gym with a 65-57 win over Woodbridge. In the first game, Marina was handed a 77-68 loss by University of Irvine. The middle game saw Corona del Mar edge Los Al, 53-51.

Three Oilers scored in double figures against Woodbridge with senior forward Harley Ruder topping all scorers with 21 points. Junior guard Mason Luna netted 20 points and senior guard Andrew TenBrink had 11 points.

Huntington (7-3) gained control in the third quarter where they outscored the Warriors, 21-9, to open up a 48-34 lead.

"I thought we played with some really good energy on the defensive side of the ball in the second half," Huntington Coach Fabian Luna said.

Two runs to close out both the second and third quarter helped University get past Marina (4-6). The Trojans (5-6) went on a 15-3 scoring run to end the first half in taking a 35-24 lead at the break, then used a 12-4 run to close out the third quarter, to increase the lead to 61-44.

Senior forward Max Gibbs led the Vikings with 20 points.

In previous action, both Huntington and Marina wrapped up tournament play on Saturday.

Huntington captured third-place at the Charlie Wilkins Classic at Westminster High by defeating Vista of San Diego, 55-37, in the third-place game. Ruder led all scorers with 14 points. TenBrink and Mason Luna added eight and seven points, respectively.

In a tournament game played Dec. 12, the Oilers outscored Ocean View by eight points in the second half to come away with a 61-54 win over the Seahawks. Ruder again led all scorers, this time, with 32 points. Sophomore forward Grant Vis had 11 points.

Ruder was named to the all-tournament team.

"I was really happy with our performance last week finishing third in a very good tournament," Fabian Luna said. "We played pretty well, top to bottom."

Marina played for fifth place at the La Canada Holiday Classic where the Vikings dropped a 66-55 overtime game to Arcadia. Senior forward Casey Hayes, who scored 22 points, was named to the all-tournament team.

In the tournament semifinals Friday, sophomore guard Greg Fronek scored 14 points and senior forward Hayden Winks had 10 points as the Vikings beat Glendale, 63-45.
