Girls' Basketball Roundup: Oilers take Winter Classic

Huntington Beach, led by tourney MVP Nakaso, beats San Ramon Valley to win title at Costa Mesa.

Huntington Beach headed into the start of its league season on a high note by winning its first tournament of the 2012-13 girls' prep basketball season Saturday at Costa Mesa.

The Oilers capped an undefeated, four-game run at the Winter Classic by pulling away in the second half to defeat San Ramon Valley of Danville, 56-34. The win put the Oilers at 10-3 overall and gave them momentum heading into the Sunset League opener Thursday.

In the title game, senior Jill Nakaso scored 12 points to go along with 12 rebounds and went on to be named MVP of the tournament. Junior Stephanie Louie scored a game-high 16 points.


Huntington's march to the title started Dec. 27 with a 61-49 win over Tustin. Nakaso had 15 points and Louie and freshman Anna Bullock both scored 10 points. Louie had 13 points and junior Paola Roa 10 points in a 39-32 win over Trabuco Hills in the championship quarterfinals.

Louie, a guard, again led the scoring attack with 16 points and Roa scored 12 as Huntington beat El Toro, 44-32, in the semifinals Friday.

Fountain Valley also competed at the Costa Mesa Winter Classic. The Barons ended the tournament Saturday and defeated El Modena, 56-47. Senior forward Marisa Teng hit five three-pointers and finished with 20 points, and senior forward Kelcie Mayott scored nine points.

The Barons started the tournament Dec. 26 with a 68-39 romp past Cal Hi of Whittier. Senior guard Jasmine Matar netted a game-high 27 points to go with five rebounds, six steals and two blocks. Junior guard Danielle Tran scored 13 points with six rebounds and three steals, and Teng scored 12 points.

In the championship quarterfinals, the Barons were defeated by Lakewood, 55-47.

The Sunset League girls' basketball race officially gets underway Thursday with three games on tap. Defending co-champions Huntington and Edison both play league openers at home. The Oilers play host to Fountain Valley, and the Chargers entertain Newport Harbor. In the other league opener, Marina will play at home against Los Alamitos.

All games start at 7 p.m.

Next week, Ocean View begins its Golden West League schedule and Brethren Christian launches its Academy League season.

Marina and Edison co-hosted the Larry Doyle O.C. Championships, which ended Saturday. The 16-team event was won by Centennial of Corona, which claimed the tournament title Saturday by defeating Orange Lutheran, 55-23, in the title game. Laguna Hills beat San Clemente, 67-60, in Saturday's third-place game.
