High School Roundup: Playoff bonanza for local teams

Plenty of squads from boys' and girls' soccer and girls' water polo prepare for the postseason.

Several local boys' and' girls' soccer and girls' water polo teams earned berths earlier this week to the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

The girls' water polo playoffs started Tuesday. First-round girls' soccer games begin Thursday and first-round boys' soccer playoffs open Friday. The CIF Southern Section Individual Wrestling Divisional Championships run Friday and Saturday.


Girls' Soccer

Edison: The Chargers enter the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs Thursday and play host to Redlands East Valley at 5 p.m.

Edison finished in second place in the Sunset League after scoring a 2-1 victory Feb. 7 at Huntington Beach. Mackenzie Cerda scored both goals and Jordyn Gressier assisted both goals.

"We had a great game against Huntington where I felt we played some great team defense, which I hope translates to CIF," Edison Coach Kerry "Mac" Crooks said.



Huntington Beach: The Oilers launch postseason play Thursday with a first-round Division 1 game at Esperanza.

Huntington, the No. 3 team from the Sunset League, is 8-6-6 overall. The Oilers dropped a 2-1 decision Feb. 7 to visiting Edison. Abby Masters scored off a feed from Dottie Rhotten, and Kate Hart and Jane Potter both had four saves.

Esperanza is the No. 2 team out of the Century League and is 13-5-6 overall.

"Psychologically, we establish an attitude that we can compete with the best no matter where we play," Huntington Coach Raul Ruiz said. "Our minds and spirits are high, our team chemistry is stronger and our determination to win is becoming our passion."

Ocean View: The Seahawks captured second place in the Golden West League on Feb. 7 by blanking Loara, 1-0. Jade Kratovil scored off an assist from Dani Dapello. Emma Malsy had four saves.

Ocean View (10-8-1) starts Division 6 postseason play at 5 p.m. Thursday at home against Duarte. The Falcons (8-10-2) are the No. 2 team from the Montview League.

Fountain Valley, Marina: Fountain Valley used first-half goals by Madison Gomez and Kasey Reeve to turn back Marina, 2-0, on the final day of Sunset League and regular-season play for both teams on Feb. 7.

The Barons finished league play 1-7-2. The Vikings went 2-6-2 in league.


Boys' Soccer

Edison: The Chargers qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs as the third-place team from the Sunset League. They travel Friday for a first-round game against defending division champion Long Beach Millikan.
