High School Roundup: Navickas qualifies for state wrestling tournament

Marina senior reaches Masters Meet final in 160-pound weight class to move on to state meet, which begins Friday in Bakersfield.

Marina senior wrestler Colin Navickas has qualified for the CIF State Tournament at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.

Navickas finished second at 160 pounds at the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet to qualify for the state meet. He reached his weight-class final which was won by Bradley Christensen of Temecula Chaparral.

Navickas, ranked seventh in the state in his weight class, won the 160-pound division title at the CIF Southern Section Eastern Division Individuals on Feb. 16 for his third-consecutive section individual championship.


The state tournament starts Friday and concludes Saturday.


Boys' Volleyball

Fountain Valley launched its season Tuesday with an impressive sweep.

The Barons took their opener by defeating visiting Villa Park, 25-15, 25-7, 25-19. Opposite Scott Cronick led the Barons in kills with nine, setter Shaquile Phuong had 12 assists, libero Patric Areyan had 10 digs and five aces and both outside hitter Alvin Truong and libero Brian Martinez had five kills.

"It was a great team effort as everyone contributed to the victory," Fountain Valley Coach Todd Hanson said.

Fountain Valley plays host to Sage Hill in a nonleague game at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Edison took to the road Tuesday to take on Laguna Beach. The Chargers won the third set but ended up with a 20-25, 20-25, 25-22, 12-25 loss to the Breakers.

In other boys' volleyball news, Marina starts its season Thursday with a 5 p.m. nonleague game at Estancia. Huntington Beach has its alumni game at 4 p.m. Saturday. The Oilers begin their season Tuesday with a 5:45 p.m. home nonleague match against Servite. Ocean View begins its season Tuesday with a 4:30 p.m. nonleague game at La Quinta in Westminster.


Girls' Basketball

The Sunset League trio of Edison, Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley, all were eliminated from CIF Southern Section playoff action on Feb. 20.

Host Edison, runner-up to the Sunset title, lost, 79-50, to No. 5-seeded Etiwanda (26-2, Baseline League champs) in a second-round Division 1AA contest. Senior shooting guard Geena Gomez, who will play next year at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, led the No. 12-seeded Chargers with 22 points.
