The Fountain Valley High express keeps on churning.

The Barons and Newport Harbor got a jump on the rest of their Sunset League baseball brethren by playing on Tuesday and on their home field, the Barons produced a 13-3 victory over the Sailors.

Fountain Valley, which leads the Sunset race at 8-0, scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to take control and had 17 hits for the game. Daniel Patzlaff went two for four with a home run and four runs batted in, Brock Lundquist went three for four with a home run, and John Shattles, Justin Brand and Jordan Lucio all went two for four.

Monty Plattner worked the first five innings and got the win. The senior is now 7-0.

"Our offense has started to help our pitching staff," Fountain Valley Coach Deric Yanagisawa said. "The hitters are showing some discipline at the plate and are really doing a good job of putting pressure on the opposing pitcher."

Yanagisawa said his squad has gotten key contributions from across the board, all of which have helped fashion a 12-game win streak that has taken the Barons to an overall record of 19-1.

Fountain Valley, which has scored 119 runs during its win streak, is ranked No. 2 behind Mater Dei in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll.

"We have been getting productivity from a lot of different players," Yanagisawa said. "Guys like Scott Schultz and Joey Loranger have given us quality innings when we needed them. JT Navarro and Daniel Rosica have stepped up defensively late in games. Nick Yang has given us some big pinch hit at bats with runners in scoring position.

"We have relied on just about each player to help us be successful thus far. We'll continue to count on everybody's contributions."

Fountain Valley and Newport Harbor completed their three-game league series Wednesday. The score wasn't available at press time. Next week, the Barons play two games against Los Alamitos starting with a 3:15 p.m. game Wednesday at Los Al.

In two Sunset League games in the past week, Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach played two incredible games that went down to the final out. It's too bad the league series between the Barons and Oilers has come to an end.

In all, there were 40 runs scored in the two games, both one-run victories for Fountain Valley, who took the series from the Oilers, 3-0.
