Softball Roundup: Marina perfect through first round

Vikings softball team, pitcher Blanco, run to 5-0 record in Sunset League, 20-2 overall.

Marina capped a perfect run through the opening round of Sunset League softball play Tuesday by shutting out host Fountain Valley, 7-0.

Junior Tera Blanco pitched a two-hitter and had two hits including a home run on offense. Blanco is now 20-2 on the mound, and the Vikings also are 20-2 overall.

Sydney McCollum went three for four and Emili Olague had two hits for Marina, which ended the first half of Sunset action with a 5-0 record.


The Vikings are ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

Fountain Valley ended the first half of league play 1-4.

"The team is playing well and we need to continue to work harder as our targets on our backs get bigger," Marina Coach Shelly Luth said. "The girls need to focus and stay challenged and not get complacent.

"Sydney McCollum, Samantha Agamaite and Sydnee Cable, are tearing it up offensively."

Edison stayed hot on the heels of Marina in the Sunset standings by coming from behind to defeat host Huntington Beach Tuesday, 5-2. Isabella Stoner had two RBIs, Liz Talataina a triple with an RBI and winning pitcher Sammy Cordova struck out seven.

Huntington took a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning where Edison scored four runs to go in front. Anna Kufta's RBI single in the third inning gave the Oilers their 1-0 lead.

Huntington had seven hits including a double by Raegan Zschach. Pitcher Micaela Vierra struck out eight.

Huntington is tied for third place in league at 2-3, and is 12-10 overall.

"The girls played with a ton a fight to come back from behind to win," said Edison Coach Kim Ensey whose team improved to 4-1 in league and 15-8 overall.

In Sunset League games Thursday, Edison plays host to Newport Harbor and Marina is at Los Alamitos, both games starting at 3:15 p.m., and Huntington plays host to Fountain Valley at 6 p.m.

Sunset play continues at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday with Edison playing at Los Alamitos, Fountain Valley at home against Newport Harbor, and Marina at home to Huntington.
