Twelve teams will put their passing game to the test Saturday when they battle it out at the Huntington Beach Passing Tournament at Huntington Beach High.

The tourney includes eight teams from Orange County, two from L.A. County and two from Riverside County. Each team will play two pool play games in the morning before each moves on to afternoon action. Each team will receive a seed for the afternoon session based on the outcome of morning session games. The six seeded games will be played at noon.

All placement games (first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth, 11th) will start at 12:50 p.m.

"It's going to be a good tournament," said Huntington Beach Coach Eric Lo whose team finished second on July 1 at the San Juan Hills passing tournament. "We have some really strong teams and there will be some really great matchups."

Bellflower St. John Bosco has to be considered the tourney favorite. The Braves will be in Huntington Beach for the second consecutive Saturday. Last week, they won the 16-team Edison passing tournament on July 13 that also included Santa Margarita.

Braves win Edison passing tournament

The 2013 Battle at the Beach passing league tournament came down Saturday to an all-Trinity League championship game. The title of the 15th annual, seven-on-seven tournament went to Bellflower St. John Bosco, which defeated Mater Dei, 20-7, in the final at Edison High.

Edison reached the quarterfinal round where it was eliminated by Westlake Village Westlake.

The Chargers had advanced to the Gold bracket for the afternoon session. After losing their pool play opener to JSerra, the Chargers bounced back to defeat both Long Beach Poly and Gardena Serra during the morning session.

Senior Christian Heffelman and junior Matt Gane shared snaps at quarterback for Edison which finished 2-2 in the tournament.

"We got punched in the mouth by JSerra but we woke up to beat Poly and Serra," Edison Coach Dave White said. "I thought both Christian and Matt were a little inconsistent, but both also did some good things. They both made plays when they needed to and all they need is a little more experience under their belts.

"There were no bad teams in this tournament. This was the best talent pool we've had here, by far."
