Gold Chargers score shutout

The Huntington Beach Gold Chargers turned in another a stingy defensive effort and rode that performance to its second shutout victory of the season, a 7-0 victory Saturday over the Los Alamitos Griffins in a Pop Warner Football Jr. Pee Wee Division game at Edison High.

The Chargers defense was tenacious in stopping the Griffins from advancing, with Jerian Operana and John Chandler making key tackles. Safety Riley O'Dell was instrumental in stopping the few passes and runs that got through the Charger defensive line, and also had an interception in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter saw Tanner Ciok, Jack Kosick and Mike Welsh move the ball downfield on offense for Huntington to set up the game's only score which came on a quarterback sneak for a touchdown by Braeden Boyles with five minutes left in the game. Kosick ran in the extra point.

The Gold Chargers (2-1) are home again Saturday and play host to the La Mirada Bruins at 9 a.m. at Edison.

Junior All-American Football

The Huntington Beach Clinic Division Oilers won for the second time in as many starts by rolling past the South Bay Packers, 40-7, at Fremont High.

Huntington (2-0) was off an running early when Jonah Del Rosario recovered an onside kick and later rushed for the first touchdown of the day. The Oilers' Aden Eckenwiler also recovered an onside kick on the ensuring kickoff. Nate Skorheim and Riley Rosenkranz had runs of 20 and 25 yards, respectively, on the Oilers' possession but South Bay held. The Packers fumbled the ball back to Huntington and Skorheim would score on a quarterback sneak.

The Oilers' lead went to 21-0 at the end of the first quarter when Skorheim threw a touchdown pass to Del Rosario.

Huntington's defense, which included a sack by Del Rosario, was paced by linemen Andrew Ancona, Halu Ikeda, Blake Gilbert, Jordan Gozon, and Nick Skorheim, in the opening quarter.

Gilbert also rushed for a touchdown. Lyrik Fata recovered another onside kick, and the Oiler's Jonathan Brown went on to run for a score.

Joseph Vardayo scored on a 40-yard run in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring for Huntington.

The play of linemen Hudson Letterman, Garrett Smith, Jeffrey Lindquist, and tight end Cade Carnival, keyed the second half for the Oilers.

Huntington hosts the Whittier Trojans at 11 a.m. Saturday at Huntington Beach High.
