Briefs: Hopkins, McCrystal among finalists for wild card spot

O'Neill is calling on the public to help determine four wild cards for the O'Neill Coldwater Classic Invitational at Steamer Lane (Santa Cruz), Nov. 6-10.

Billy Hopkins, 21, and Quinn McCrystal, 23, both of Huntington Beach, are among eight finalists in contention for a wild-card spot.

The other six finalists are Dylan Goodale, 22 (Kilauea, Hawaii); Chris Foster, 23 (Kapaa, Hawaii); Andrew Jacobson, 18 (Malibu); Kalani Robb, 36 (Sunset Beach, Hawaii); Kilian Garland, 26 (Santa Barbara), and Noi Kaulukukui, 32 (Santa Cruz).

The four wild-card winners will round out a 16-man field of competitors that includes 10 invited surfers: Stu Kennedy, Granger Larsen, Wade Carmichael, Torrey Meister, Hank Gaskell, Dion Atkinson, Shaun Joubert, Ricardo Christie, Chris Waring, and Cory Arrambide.

Hoops clinics at Ocean View

Ocean View High will hold the second of six free basketball clinics Monday at the school's gymnasium.

The clinics will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. over the next six Mondays through Nov. 2. Registration will be taken at 6 p.m. each Monday night prior to the start of each clinic. A parent or guardian must be present at the time of registration.

Junior high morning swim class

Edison High swim and water polo head coach Diggy Riley is offering a morning training program that will begin at the school pool in the coming weeks.

The program will be similar to the high school swim program in terms of practices, technique, stroke work, starts and turns, and more. Those interested must already know how to swim. Knowing all four strokes is not a prerequisite.

Class times are tentatively set for 6:15 to 7:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Patterson wins title

Casey Patterson (Huntington Beach) and Jake Gibb (Costa Mesa) won their fourth-consecutive men's tournament title Sunday at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Santa Barbara Open.

Patterson and Gibb, the top-seeded team in the tournament, defeated No. 4 seeds Tri Bourne (Palos Verdes)/John Hyden (Sherman Oaks), 21-19, 21-19, in Sunday's final. The women's final was won Sunday by the No. 1-seeded team of April Ross (Costa Mesa) and Kerri Walsh Jennings (Manhattan Beach), who paired as a team for the first time on the AVP, by turning back No. 3 seeds Jennifer Fopma (Costa Mesa)/Brooke Sweat (Hermosa Beach), 21-18, 21-10.

The AVP seven-stop tour wraps Oct. 17-20 with the Huntington Beach Open at the south side of the Huntington Beach pier.
