High School Roundup: Runners bound for Fresno

Local cross-country runners qualify for Saturday's CIF State Championships.

The Edison High girls' cross-country team is headed to the CIF State Cross-Country Championships Saturday.

The Chargers earned a spot in the State meet at Woodward Park in Fresno by finishing in seventh place in the Division 1 team standings at the CIF Southern Section Cross-Country Championships at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Individually, junior Norberto Osorio of Fountain Valley and Marina senior Craig Huff qualified to run at the State meet.

Edison finished with a team time of 1 hour 32 minutes, 41 seconds (1:32:41) on the three-mile course. The Chargers finished 17th, overall, among all schools competing in the five girls' divisions.

Representing the Chargers at State Saturday are seniors Gabrielle and Alexa Yatauro, Sara Zylstra, and Cassy Borton, juniors Julia Sienski and Mac Queenenville, and sophomore Riley Bennyworth.

The girls' Division 1 race, which also includes Great Oak, Trabuco Hills, Capistrano Valley, Vista Murrieta, Yucaipa and San Clemente, starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

The top three teams and top 10 individuals in each race Saturday receive awards in all five divisions for both boys and girls.

Also at the CIF-SS Championships Saturday at Mt. SAC, Marina (1:36:19) finished 16th in girls' Division, and in 39th-place, overall. In boys' Division 1, Fountain Valley (1:17:48) was eighth. The Barons placed 17th, overall, among all teams in all divisions.

Boys' Water Polo

Ocean View's bid for a CIF Southern Section Division 7 championship came to an end Nov. 20 in the semifinal round of the playoffs. The Seahawks (21-11) were eliminated from title contention by No. 2-seed Yorba Linda which scored an 11-8 victory at Segerstrom High.

Ocean View, the No. 5-seed in the division playoffs, finished in second-place in the Golden West League. Segerstrom, which won the GWL title and was the top-seed in the playoffs, won the Division 7 championship Saturday by defeating Yorba Linda, 9-8, in the title game.
