Briefs: Chargers take second

The Huntington Beach Pop Warner Football Junior Pee Wee Green Chargers cheerleading team earned second place at a regional competition Sunday at the Long Beach Arena and with it, an upcoming trip to a Nationals competition Dec. 9 at Walt Disney World ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.

The cheer squad, made up of seven members ranging in age from 8-10, and two mascots ages five and seven, represented the Orange Empire Conference at the regional competition. HBPWF Cheer is part of the nationally-known Pop Warner Little Scholars nonprofit program dedicated to the scholastic and physical improvement of youth. The team is led by volunteer coaches Melissa Applebee and Alyssa Scott from Marina High, and Lisa Wiltfong and Nikole Baak.

The team is seeking sponsorship donations to get to the national competition in Florida. The program is a recognized 501c3 non-profit corporation.

Trio on top

Three Huntington Beach athletes took first-place finishes Saturday at the National Scholastic Surfing Assn. Explorer Division competition at Seaside Reef, Cardiff by the Sea.

Kirk Weissinger won the Explorer Men's division and also placed second behind Takumi Yasui-Saitama of Japan in the Explorer Boys' division. Lea Taylor of Huntington won Explorer Women's, and Rick Fignetti won both the Explorer Super Seniors and Explorer Duke divisions. Taylor finished ahead of second-place Samantha Cendro of Huntington, and Peter Townend of Huntington was second to Fignetti in the Explorer Duke competition.

In other division finishes involving Huntington athletes, Dylan Hord was sixth in Explorer Boys, Gavin Wilchek was sixth in Explorer Super Groms, and Paul Devoy was second in Explorer Kneeboard.
