The Edison High girls' water polo team prepped for the start of the Sunset League race by competing last weekend at the Holiday Cup.

The Chargers, who rose to No. 7 in this week's CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, split four games at one of the premiere girls' water polo events in the Southland.

Edison began the tournament Friday and lost, 9-8, to Riverside Poly, but bounced back to edge Carlsbad, 8-7. Sabrina Jensen scored four goals, Delaney Cleveland three goals, and Josette Santos had nine saves in the loss to Riverside Poly, the top-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 5. Jensen again led the scoring with four goals, and Cleveland scored twice, in the win against a Carlsbad team that is ranked No. 1 in CIF San Diego Section Division 1.

In their third tournament game, against Coronado (No. 4, CIF San Diego Section Division 4), the Chargers subdued the Islanders, 13-12, in two overtime periods. Cleveland torched the nets for eight goals to lead the scoring. Jensen scored three times including the game-winner on a no-look shot from six meters. Santos recorded 11 saves.

Edison fell in its tourney finale, 9-6, to Long Beach Wilson (No. 10, CIF Southern Section Division 2). Jensen posted four goals and Cleveland scored two goals.

Jensen, a junior has scored 48 goals in 15 games this season. She scored 44 total goals last year.

Cleveland, also a junior, is second in scoring for the Chargers with 40 goals, 15 more than she had during the 2012-13 season.

"Our girls had a very good tournament, especially considering that we played without two key starters the entire weekend," Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. "Our two wins over the San Diego teams were confidence builders for us. We trailed in both games and as the girls have done so often this season, they refused to lose."

Edison took a 7-8 record into the opening day of the Sunset League race Wednesday. Scores from the three league openers weren't available at press time.

In Sunset games Wednesday at Newport Harbor High, Edison and Los Alamitos start the triple header at 5 p.m., followed by the Fountain Valley-Newport Harbor game at 6:05 p.m., and the Marina-Huntington Beach matchup at 7:10 p.m.

In a nonleague girls' soccer game Tuesday, Brittney Stevens scored twice and Fountain Valley picked up a 2-0 home victory against Ocean View.
