HUNTINGTON BEACH --- Sometimes the curveball didn’t curve and went behind the Ocean View batter. But, too often, it found the strike zone Sunday. South Mission Viejo pitcher Wesley VandenBranden shut down the Ocean View bats for much of the day as South Mission Viejo posted a 5-1 victory in the Little League Section 10 9/10-Year-Old All-Star tournament. South Mission Viejo advanced to the championship series Tuesday, while Ocean View will face Aliso Viejo tonight (Monday)

With goalkeepers Alexia Roehr and Kelly Hyder combined to shut out four tournament opponents in as many games, the Huntington Beach AYSO Region 56's Under-12 girls Gold All-Star team last weekend captured the Costa Mesa Classic Championship. An Alex Dunn goal in the opening period proved to be the game-winner in the tournament final, where the Pier Pressure blanked Laguna Niguel of Region 41. The play of Hyder, Carley Bonchonsky, and Mary Horstmann - whose 10-minute defensive stand in the fourth quarter repeatedly turned back several Laguna Niguel attacks on goal, helped preserve the precarious one-goal lead.
