The Express built a 9-0 lead but had to fend off the Bats to hold on for a 9-7 victory in Ocean View Little League Minor A Division action Saturday. Express pitchers Michael Austin (3 2/3 innings) and Stone Gabriele (1 1/3 innings) combined to shut out the Bats for the first five innings. Austin and Gabriele got plenty of support from the defense behind them, as Cade Haakenson , Tanner Harris , Tyler LaForce and Aaron Linville , made key plays.

The Twins scored four runs in the bottom of the first and used that strong start to score an eventual, 5-0 shutout win over the Giants in Fountain Valley Little League Minor A Division action. Nathan Young brought in the first run on a single, Riley Hanson hit a two-run home run and Steven Gonzalez singled and later scored on a wild pitch. Hanson also singled in the third and scored on Shane McCarthy's ground out. Young, Hanson, Gonzalez and Nick Taylor had two hits each. Taylor also allowed two hits, walked two and struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings to get the pitching win. Young closed and allowed one hit. Azeal Peralta led the Giants with two hits and one stolen base.

The Reds took a first-inning lead on the Orioles and never looked back en route to a 7-1 Majors Division victory at Ocean View Little League. A two-run single by Benjamin Davis in the opening inning put the Reds in the lead. They scored four more runs in the second on an RBI single by Gavin Kennedy and a three-run home run by Mason Stinson . It was the third home run of the season for Stinson. The Reds added their final run in the fifth when Stinson scored on a sacrifice fly by Kennedy.

Braydon Salzman hit a two-run home run to cap a three-run fifth inning for the Braves, who broke a scoreless game against the Rays and went on to a 3-0 victory Monday in Majors Division action at Ocean View Little League. Salzman, who also went the distance on the mound for the win, scored Jacob Sievers, who had singled home Devin Lacy for the game's first run. The Braves also got a key defensive stop at first base in the sixth inning from James Williams and Jason Mayorga to prevent the Rays from scoring.

Ocean View Little League Majors Division Red Sox 11, Yankees 10: The Red Sox? Luke Johnston walked in the seventh inning, then stole second base, third and home for a thrilling come-from-behind victory. Chris Hoffman pitched 2 1/3 innings for the Red Sox, allowing no hits and striking out six. Cameron Kaneko pitched two hitless scoreless innings with four strikeouts. The Red Sox had eight runs in the first, highlighted by a three-run home run by Kaneko.

The Hot Rods, Iron Pigs and Red Wings went into spring break on a winning note as each picked up victories Saturday in Ocean View Little League Minor A Division play. Hot Rods 11, Bats 9: The Hot Rods outlasted the Bats in a game where the teams combined for 21 hits. Antonio Ventimiglia went three for three with a double, Nick Madole doubled twice, Micah Kennedy singled and doubled and Gavin Kells singled for the Hot Rods. AJ Hurtado pitched two innings, giving up only one run. Kells, Ventimiglia, Quentin Custodio and Madole all saw relief action.

Eric Snyder got a huge decision out of the way last week. Snyder, a sophomore centerfielder at Edison High who has already caught the eye of college programs and scouts alike, gave a verbal commitment to UCLA. Last year as a freshman, he set school records for most hits in a single season (53) and most at-bats (106). He also tied a school record held by Jeff Kent for the best single-season batting average (.500). ?They have a great history when it comes to education and athletics,?

The Yankees got their first victory of the season Saturday by defeating the Giants, 9-7, in an exciting Major division game at Ocean View Little League. Triples by Naeco Logan and Mauro Ballinas in the first inning led to a 2-0 lead for the Yankees. William Brooks hit a home run with Mathew Scully on base in the second to increase the lead to 4-0. The momentum continued in the third when Ballinas doubled and Luca Pantel delivered an RBI double to up the lead to 6-0. The Giants rallied for two runs in the fourth but the Yankees scored three more runs on a double from Logan, single by Ballinas and another RBI double by Pantel.

Alec Muirhead singled in Matt Hernandez with the winning run in the top of the sixth and the Red Wings won for the second time in as many days when they knocked off the Bats, 5-4, in an Ocean View Little League Minor A Divison game Saturday. The Red Wings built a 3-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run double from Aiden Daniels being the key blow. The Bats drew even with three runs of their own in the second as Jake D'Amico doubled in a pair of runs. Daniel Kotkosky earned the victory with three innings of no-hit relief.

Ocean View senior Timmy Robinson was drafted in the 31st round (940th overall) of the Major League Baseball First-Year Draft on June 6 by the Minnesota Twins. Robinson, who signed last month with USC, batted .523 during the prep season, hit 12 home runs and drove in 37 runs in 27 games. His half-brother, Alex Burnett, a graduate of Ocean View, is a relief pitcher for the Twins. Ocean View baseball Coach Shane Borowski had Robinson in his classroom during the second day of the draft.

In a back-and-forth Majors Division game, the Orioles scored the winning run in the sixth inning to pull out a 5-4 victory over the Angels in Ocean View Little League action. The Angels pulled into a 4-4 tie after Jacob Hathcock scored, but Nick Daniel doubled and went on to score the decisive run for the Orioles. The Orioles were up early, 1-0, but the Angels used singles by Jack Pelc, Ken Takada, Chandler Forth and Matt Maloney to build a 3-1 lead. The Orioles tied the score in the third inning behind singles by Danny Duarte, Jacob Bonillas and Brad Monroe, then took the lead in the fourth on a single by Ryan Welander, who went on to score on a triple by Kyle Newman.

The Mud Hens won an exciting game against the Iron Pigs on Saturday when Reilly Kells doubled in the winning run in the top of the sixth for a 9-7 victory in Ocean View Little League Minor A Division action. It was the second big hit of the game for Kells, who earlier tripled in the fourth. The Mud Hens took the lead in the top of the first when Thomas Williams tripled and scored on Kyle Roeder's single. Jag Burden doubled in a second run. The Iron Pigs rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead, but a run-scoring double by Zander Fletcher in the second inning tied the score at 3. — Laurie Skorheim * River Cats 8, Muckdogs 2: The River Cats erupted for seven runs in the first three innings and went on to down the Muckdogs in Minor A play.

Dylan Garrity, who graduated in June from Edison High and now is at Sacramento State, has been named the Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year in men's basketball. Garrity was ranked sixth nationally with 6.9 assists per game. Garrity started 27 of the Hornets' 28 games and averaged 8.1 points and 33.8 minutes per game. In a game against Montana State, Garrity registered 16 assists, which was a school record. Garrity's average of 6.9 assists per game tied a school single-season record and his 193 assists rank second in school history.

"Oh, I almost forgot — we flew up to Sacramento to meet Gov. Brown, too. " So chuckled Ocean View Little League manager Jeff Pratto to me recently as we spoke about the head-spinning series of events that have rolled out in the wake of his team's recent Little League Baseball World Series championship. Yes, there was just a thrilling seven-game major league contest between Texas and St. Louis. But here in Huntington Beach, Ocean View's feat is still the one people are talking about, and no doubt will continue to remember for generations.
