WESTMINSTER - It wasn't the way George Pascoe and his Marina football team wanted to end the first half of their 2013 season. The Vikings trailed visiting Capistrano Valley throughout Friday's nonleague contest at Westminster High, but still were within striking distance at halftime. The second half was a different story. The Cougars used a big offensive output in the third quarter to pull way, and the game turned to a running clock for the fourth quarter. When the final 12 minutes ticked by in, well, 12 minutes, the Cougars had earned a 42-7 victory at Boswell Field.

Every cross country team had to make a quick mental adjustment in the CIF Southern Section Division finals at Mt. San Antonio College last Saturday after rain pushed the races onto an alternate, flat and mostly paved course. It didn't hold back the Marina High girls' cross country team, which was the only local team to advance to the CIF State Meet by taking sixth in Division I with the top-seven teams making the cut. The Vikings were led by Kylie Nishisaka, who placed sixth individually in 16 minutes 30 seconds.

WESTMINSTER — A beautiful new football stadium at Boswell Field meant no fans on the field. As the announcer reminded the fans near the end of the game, only those with a yellow access pass were allowed on Friday night as Marina High opened its season against Capistrano Valley. New digs, but same problems for the Vikings, as two big turnovers were too much to overcome in a 21-10 loss. "The thing that killed us tonight was two turnovers deep in our territory." Coach Dan Petrone said.
