SANTA ANA — Anthony Brown said the Ocean View High boys’ basketball team wanted to set the tone early in Friday night’s CIF Southern Section Division IV-AA semifinal game. The No. 3-seeded Seahawks, as it turned out, wanted to play smash-mouth basketball against No. 2 Serra. “We wanted to attack them right from the beginning and not them let them have a chance to get in the game, or think they could play with us,” junior guard Anthony Brown said.

Brandice Cutspec thought she had hit a pop up to the outfield. It wasn’t until the sophomore said she heard “loud cheering” from Ocean View fans and then caught teammates jumping up and down out of the corner of her eye that she knew she hadn’t hit into just any routine fly out. Cutspec’s sixth-inning shot cleared the fence in left-center field, helping the Ocean View softball team to an 8-3 victory against Bishop...

In the words of Coach Jeff Andrews, Sage Hill School boys water polo players are extremely driven entering this season, in both mind and body. Andrews said Lightning players are hungry to improve upon last season's CIF Southern Section Division VI playoff berth, the first in the program's five-year history and advance past the first round. They boast the speed to increase their chances of reaching and moving through the postseason. "We're basically the same team we were last year, but this year's team is a lot faster," said Andrews, who played at UC Irvine and enters his third season at the helm.

On the road again. That's where you will find Ocean View High throughout the majority of the 2010 prep football season. The reason? The Seahawks have been displaced due to the installment of an all-weather track at the school's stadium this fall, Coach Harold Eggers said, adding that tear-up is expected to begin in late-September. At least Ocean View is scheduled to get in one true home game, a Sept. 17 nonleague matchup with Laguna Beach. The Seahawks will use the stadiums at Westminster and Huntington Beach highs for other "home" game.

Over the last 10 years, the Edison High football program has enjoyed plenty of success, winning or sharing five consecutive Sunset League titles and reaching the CIF Pac-5 Division championship game on three occasions. The Chargers' most recent trip to the title game came last December, but as they ready themselves for the start of the 2010 season, a majority of that 13-1 team has moved on. Dave White enters his 25th year as head coach of his alma mater with the task of having to construct a team that welcomes back just three starters.

Editor's note: This is the second in a three-part series about the effects of the Obama administration's health - care reform on Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley health - care providers and their patients. Dr. Peter Anderson sometimes goes for days in Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center's emergency room without treating an emergency. It's not for lack of patients. Anderson, the director of the hospital's emergency department for 35 years, has seen increasing numbers of people check in with ailments that traditionally would be handled by a family doctor.

He had heard a few stories of what it was like to be in Omaha, Neb., in late-June, but nothing could prepare Beau Amaral for what he was to about to experience. Even when it was all over, two days removed from competing at the baseball College World Series, and on a campout July 1 with his family down in San Clemente, Amaral found it difficult to find the words to describe it all. A year ago, he was playing in a CIF prep baseball final for Huntington Beach High. For the past two weeks, at age 19, he had played on college baseball's ultimate stage, Rosenblatt Stadium, where he was a integral part of the UCLA Bruins' runner-up finish to the national title.
