California Futbol Club's Code Red, a girls' under-13 team, will enter postseason play on a roll. Code Red capped its spring regular season with a pair of 3-0 victories over Irvine Rush and Futbol Club Bayern. Code Red began the two-game stretch by blanking Irvine Rush. Erika Longoria scored in the first few minutes on a solo run. She added another goal, set up by assists from Breanne Justice and Rebecca Cruz. Alison Hensley finished off the scoring with an arcing shot from outside the penalty area.

The Mizuno Sluggers, a 14-and-under baseball team composed of local players, won the Memorial Day Wood Bat Tournament in Placentia. The tournament was run by the California Competitive Youth Baseball organization. The Huntington Beach-based team overcame a first game loss to win four consecutive games. In the championship game, the Sluggers scored six runs in the third inning and went on to defeat the La Mirada Bulls, 10-5. In other youth action: Girls' soccer Code Red third in tournament play Code Red, a newly formed girls' Under-13 Division soccer team from Huntington Beach, captured third-place at the Irvine Memorial Classic Soccer Tournament.

Code Red, a spring girls' Under-13 team in California Futbol Club, cruised to a pair of easy weekend victories. In its first match, Code Red took care of Newport United, 3-0. Erika Longoria started the scoring for Code Red with a solo run to the goal past a host of defenders, giving her squad a 1-0 lead at the break. After the halftime break, Kelly Mitsumori and Rebecca Cruz each added an unassisted goal to make it 3-0. Code Red followed that win with a 5-1 rout of the Untouchables.

California Futbol Club's girls' 13-and-under team, Code Red, captured the first-place trophy at the 12th annual Celtic Cup. The tournament was played in cold and windy conditions in San Bernardino. In the tournament final, Code Red and Rancho Bernardo fought to a scoreless tie through regulation. Each made four of five kicks from the first shootout period before kicks by Jodi Hwang and Rachel Pasternak in the second shootout delivered a hard-fought victory for Code Red. Brittany Martinez, Alison Hensley, Lauren Hanson and Erika Longoria each scored in the first overtime for Code Red. In their first pool play match, Code Red came from behind to earn a 1-1 tie with the Claremont Stars Red, getting the tying score on a low, hard shot by Longoria off an assist by Osiris Ceja.

California Futbol Club Code Red won four consecutive weekend matches and in the process, captured first place in its division at the Orange Coast United Soccer Tournament. Code Red shut out all four of their opponents, defeating Laguna Beach (3-0), Moreno Valley (1-0), the Westside Breakers (1-0) and the California Stars (2-0). The efforts of defenders Lauren Hanson, Ashley Haprov, Danica McGuire, Jodi Hwang, and George Demes allowed keeper Tiffany Van Tress to record four shutouts.

The 2-2 match keeps local team in first place in Coast Soccer League.A 2-2 tie against Cypress Elite Saturday didn't affect Code Red in the Coast Soccer League standings, as the local girls' under-14 team maintained its hold on first place. Code Red struck first when Andrea Ecker found Erika Longoria on the wing and Longoria hit a chip shot for a 1-0 lead. Cypress retaliated with consecutive goals to go up 2-1, and that score stood until the final minute of regulation play. In that final minute, Ecker was taken down by a Cypress player in the penalty box, and Code Red was awarded a penalty kick.

The California Futbol Club Code Red, a local girls' under-13 soccer team, captured second-place at the Junior United Soccer Assn. Kickoff Tournament over Labor Day Weekend. The squad, thanks to a relentless defense, won three pool play matches to reach the semifinals. In the process, Code Red only allowed one goal in their first four matches. They advanced to the tournament final where they were edged by the Stampede, 1-0. The defense was led by Tiffany Van Tress, George Demes, Danica McGuire, Jodi Hwang and Breanne Justice.

Back-to-back wins last weekend by the South Coast Soccer Club's Code Red girls' under-14 was enough to clinch first place in the Silver Central Division. Code Red 3, Rangers 0 A goal by Kirsten Marony, set up by an assist from Kiley Godfrey-Cravens in the first minute, set Code Red on its way to victory. Godfrey-Cravens got into the scoring act when she poked a pass by Alison Hensley into the corner of the net. Godfrey-Cravens picked up where second assist of the match and returned the favor to Hensley in the second half, by setting up a goal by Hensley.

Code Red, a girls' under-14 team out of South Coast Soccer, opened up the season by winning its division at the Andrew Dobransky Memorial Tournament in San Diego. The squad went 4-0 in tournament play, winning its first three matches by identical 2-1 scores. Code Red 2, Hot Spurs Red 1 Code Red began the tournament with a win over the tournament host. Following a scoreless first half, Jodi Hwang of Code Red opened up the scoring on a well-placed penalty kick.

Last month's rains might have delayed the 2005 State Cup tournament, but once play began last weekend, California Futbol Club Code Red, a local girls' under-13 club soccer team, showed the layoff had little effect on its play. Code Red won its first four games -- one by forfeit -- to advance the squad to this weekend's round of 32 in Lancaster. Code Red was awarded a forfeit in its first match, and then defeated the Blast, 2-1, in its first actual play on the field.

Connor Gordon scores only goal in 1-0 victory.The HB United came up with a big defensive effort to claim the AYSO Area 11K All-Star Under-10 Boys' Silver Division championship. While the defense was holding Region 117 scoreless, it took a goal from Connor Gordon, off an assist by Cooper Kossick, in the second overtime period to lift HB United to victory. The win allowed HB United to avenge an earlier, 4-3 loss to Region 117. The team finished the tournament with a 5-2 record.

Code Red 3, FC Irvine 1 The Code Red defensive unit -- led by sweeper Jodi Hwang, keeper Tiffany Van Tress and fullbacks Rebecca Cruz and Lauren Hanson -- kept Irvine off the scoreboard in a scoreless first half.

South Coast Code Red gained sole possession of first place in the girls' under-14 Silver Central Division of the Coast Soccer League by defeating the Fullerton Rangers, 3-0. The win came a day after Code Red suffered a 1-0 shutout loss to the Wolfpack. Code Red 3, Rangers 0 Code Red broke away after a scoreless first half to blank the Rangers. The backfield of Lauren Hanson, Maylett Roldan, Jodi Hwang, Erica Cabibbo and Rachel Pasternak kept the Rangers scoreless in the first half.

South Coast Code Red picked up another victory by posting a decisive 2-1 win over Futbol Club Bayern Sunday in an under-14 girls' club soccer matchup. Code Red struck early in the match and never trailed. After a shot by Erika Longoria went off the Bayern goalie, Kelly Mitsumori was positioned perfectly to pick up the rebound and post the game's first goal in the opening minute of play. The Code Red midfield -- led by Osiris Ceja, Andrea Ecker, Alli Budd and Alison Hensley -- kept up the offensive pressure, along with forwards Kirsten Marony and Breanne Justice.

Code Red, a local girls' under-13 club soccer team, closed out its spring season by finishing second at the California Soccer League Cup tournament. Code Red defeated the Riverside Fury, 4-3, in a shootout before falling in the tournament final, 2-1, to the San Bernardino Blast, as temperatures surpassed the 100-degree mark at the Blast Soccer Complex in San Bernardino. Against the Riverside Fury, the two teams combined to score three goals in the opening half.

The Huntington Beach High athletic department will host its "Centennial Celebration of Athletics at Huntington Beach High School" during a June 10 fundraising event. The festivities will take place between 6 p.m. and midnight at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort. A donation of $75 per person includes dinner and dancing, a slide show, raffle and silent auction. Invitation to the event is extended to anyone who has participated or contributed to the school's athletic history in any form, current and former athletes, Girls Athletic Assn.
