Mike Sciacca Fred Thomas' strong all-around performance last weekend was the big reason the Mets were able to top the Rangers, 4-2, in Majors Division play. Thomas pitched a complete game and struck out 16 while allowing just three hits. He also provided most of the offense for the Mets with a double, two-run home run and two RBI. Shawn Stiffler also doubled and Nick Mazzone and Mike D-also singled. Brayden Kent went two for two and Stuart Chenier singled to account for the Rangers offense.

Pitching dominated Saturday's meeting between the Cardinals and Dodgers, and it was the Cardinals who pulled out a 3-1 victory in Seaview Little League Majors Division action. Cardinal starter Nick Cappuccili struck out 11 and allowed just two hits in four innings, and reliever Austin Morgan struck out four with one hit to close out the victory. Dodger hurler Jayson Hayes also was tough on the mound, striking out seven while allowing one hit. In other games: Pirates 3, Angels 2 In another pitcher's duel, the Pirates' Eric Uttecht struck out six and gave up four hits in a complete game, and Jake Pinkham fanned nine and allowed four hits for the Angels.

Martin Duran was a perfect 4 for 4 from the plate Friday and the Marlins were near perfect in defeating the Yankees, 13-1, in Fountain Valley Little League Majors Division play at Mile Square Park. A potent Marlin offense also included a double, triple, and three RBI by Jessey Cordero, a single and double by Bobby Johnson, an RBI double by James Menke, and RBI singles by Jeff Spirk and Mauricio Onofre. The Yankees mustered four hits, singles by Philip Burden, David McClelland, Roger Huffman, and John Larner.

Greg Davis got a complete game victory Saturday for the Dodgers, his mastery on the mound proved too much for the Reds to handle. Davis recorded 16 strikeouts in leading the Dodgers to a 7-1 Majors Division victory. He allowed two walks and just one hit. The Dodgers were led by Logan Strook, who doubled and had three RBI, Michael Lucas and Mark Miller, each with a double and RBI and Tyler Chapman, who doubled and scored three runs. Davis, Bryan Visnoski and Trevor Gordon added singles.

The Pirates were a two-time winner in Majors Division play last the week as they toppled both the Cardinals, 3-0, and the Yankees, 11-5. Cort Ross carried the big bat for the Pirates against the Cardinals, beginning with his third home run of the season in a first inning at-bat, followed by an RBI single in the third inning. He also pitched a complete game victory with 11 strikeouts and three hits. Brian Adsit added an RBI double for the Pirates.

Clitheroe also struck out six. He was backed by an offense that saw Connor Ahern record an RBI single and Ryan Bleile had two bunt singles. The Cubs' Chase Leamer was locked in a pitchers' duel with Clitheroe and struck out seven in five innings. Dillon Brown had two singles and an RBI to pace the Cubs on offense.

Gerald Marcucci led the Pirates on offense with two hits and two runs scored, and Christian Anderson had an RBI single. The Cubs got a double from Ryan Ortolf and a single from Vincent Wetzel. Ortolf struck out five in three innings on the mound. In other Majors Division games: Red Sox 7, Angels 6 Red Sox reliever Jonathan Steele got the victory, and picked up a pair of hits and two RBIs in an extra-innings game.

The South Huntington Beach girls Under-8 fastpitch softball team got its season off to a successful start by winning the Cypress Kick-Off Tournament. Led by the pitching of tournament MVP Stephanie Engle, South Huntington Beach swept its competition and outscored its four opponents, 37-9. Victims included West Garden Grove (17-0), host Cypress (3-2), and Long Beach twice, the first game by a 7-3 margin, and the second meeting, a 10-4 victory in the division's title game.

Astros pitching ace Dallas Walters pitched a complete game no-hitter to lead his ballclub to a 1-0 victory over the Dodgers and highlight Saturday's Majors Division play at Ocean View Little League. The defensive struggle also featured a strong pitching performance by the Dodgers' Stephen Donahue, who allowed six hits. The victory by the Astros reversed a 1-0 Dodgers' win on opening day. The only run in the game came in the first inning, as consecutive hits by Kris Bernard, David Jacobs, and Walters produced a 1-0 Astros' lead.

Briefly in the news Team PacSun of Huntington Beach Girls Softball took on South Huntington Beach Clueless in two recent under-14 Division games and came out victorious on both occasions. In the first game, PacSun edged Clueless, 5-4. The score was tied 4-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. There, Mallory Langford and Paige West started PacSun's final at-bat with consecutive singles, setting up Michelle Fuzzard's single, which scored Langford for the decisive run. It was the second hit of the game for Fuzzard.

The Pirates got their 2004 season off to a rollicking start by coming back from an early deficit to post a 15-7 victory over the Yankees on the opening day of Majors Division play at Seaview Little League. The Yankees produced three runs in the first inning to grab an early lead, but the Pirates took charge of the game in third inning. The Pirates racked up 13 hits. Jacob Yusko doubled and singled with two RBIs, Aaron Anguiano had a pair of hits and drove in two runs, Nick Pedevilla hit a two-run single and Lauren Czerniachowski had an RBI bunt single.

The Tigers of Huntington Valley Little League roared through an undefeated league season and in the process won the Minor B Division championship. The Tigers will take a 21-0-1 record into today's District 62 Tournament of Champions action, hosted by Seaview Little League. Huntington Valley battles Westminster No. 2 today at 5 p.m. Leading the offense throughout the season was the hitting of Greg Carter, Jake Weiser, Ryan Morrissey and David Clegg.

Michael Mendez smacked a three-run home run in the opening inning Saturday, a hit which propelled the White Sox to a 6-2 victory over the Diamondbacks in Majors Division play. Charles Pearson had a single and two RBI, Hunter White singled with an RBI and starting pitcher White fanned seven. For the Diamondbacks, Jenna Balester doubled with an RBI, Chase Barnes doubled and Balester and Barnes combined to strike out eight. In other games: Mariners 7, Rangers 2 Peter Bryson struck out five in a complete game and also singled twice, Austin Ray doubled, singled and had an RBI, Justin Draeger doubled and had three RBI, Justin Gunn-Reed doubled with an RBI and Luke Patrick went 3 for 3 to lead the Mariners.
