The Huntington Beach High boys' volleyball team weaved its way through tough competition to earn a spot Monday in the Orange County Championships Division 1 final at Edison High. In the title game, a hotly contested one against San Clemente, the top-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 1, the fifth-ranked Oilers came up just shy of handing the Tritons their first loss. San Clemente held off the Oilers in four sets, 25-22, 25-23, 20-25, 25-19, to win the crown. Senior setter Matt Butler had four kills and 50 assists.

Huntington Beach Coach Eric Lo said during the preseason that the first three games of the season would tell him a lot about his 2011 football team. Games against El Toro, Corona del Mar and Foothill, two of whom were rivals when the Oilers belonged to the Sea View League, figured to test Huntington right out of the gate. Lo did learn something last Friday at Cap Sheue Field: his team can win the close one. Huntington never trailed against El Toro, but the Oilers had to withstand a barrage of passes - 55 of them from Chargers quarterback Conner Manning - and a late comeback attempt to post a 23-21 season-opening victory.

I just discovered Party All the Time, a new boutique in Corona del Mar that's best described as a combination of Anthropologie, Where's The Party? and Roger's Gardens. Three sisters-in-law opened the shop a few months ago, and locals are going crazy for its affordable mix of gifts and party supplies that's unlike anything in Corona del Mar. You can run in and find a gift in the $20-$30 range in no time, and if you're planning a party, you'll find glittery, fun birthday décor, invitations, wrapping, cards, a candy buffet and more.

Caffeine can help local students! The first Orange County Blend coffee and tea arrived at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf stores throughout Orange County, and proceeds will benefit local schools. The Orange County Blend Coffee is smooth with a light citrus aroma, a slight malty taste and a caramel finish. And the exclusive Orange County Sunshine Blend Tea is a premium oolong tea that's sweetly scented with orange blossoms and tart orange zest. The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is giving $1 from the sale of each bag of the OC Blend to 24 Orange County schools to help fund computer labs, art, music and science programs and more.

Following a summer of passing league contests, preseason two-a-days and going head-to-head against teammates, the 2010 prep football season finally begins Friday for both Huntington Beach and Marina. Both teams are traveling to begin their campaigns — the Oilers on a short drive into Newport Beach to face Corona del Mar while the Vikings head further south to Capistrano Valley. HUNTINGTON BEACH — No one could top the Huntington Beach High boys’ volleyball team all weekend in the Orange County Championships. It was a close match, but the same was true Monday night, too. Huntington Beach rallied to top CdM, 18-25, 25-17, 15-12, in the Division I final at Edison High. The Oilers, ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll, went undefeated in six tournament matches. No. 4 Corona del Mar, meanwhile, lost its first two pool-play matches Friday — one to the Oilers — and qualified for the quarterfinals via a tiebreaker.
