HUNTINGTON BEACH — No one could top the Huntington Beach High boys’ volleyball team all weekend in the Orange County Championships. It was a close match, but the same was true Monday night, too. Huntington Beach rallied to top CdM, 18-25, 25-17, 15-12, in the Division I final at Edison High. The Oilers, ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll, went undefeated in six tournament matches. No. 4 Corona del Mar, meanwhile, lost its first two pool-play matches Friday — one to the Oilers — and qualified for the quarterfinals via a tiebreaker.

Struggling a bit in the Sunset League, the Fountain Valley High baseball team has found Spring Break much more enjoyable on the baseball field. The Barons advanced to the championship game of the Beach Pit Classic tournament, holding off host Corona del Mar, 9-8, in the semifinals Tuesday. Fountain Valley (7-7) played Newport Harbor (6-8) in the title game Wednesday, after press time. Look for a story on the game online at . “It’s a great tournament,” Barons Coach Joe MacDonald said.

Huntington Beach Coach Eric Lo said during the preseason that the first three games of the season would tell him a lot about his 2011 football team. Games against El Toro, Corona del Mar and Foothill, two of whom were rivals when the Oilers belonged to the Sea View League, figured to test Huntington right out of the gate. Lo did learn something last Friday at Cap Sheue Field: his team can win the close one. Huntington never trailed against El Toro, but the Oilers had to withstand a barrage of passes - 55 of them from Chargers quarterback Conner Manning - and a late comeback attempt to post a 23-21 season-opening victory.

Newport Harbor High football coach Jeff Brinkley has long contended that the annual Battle of the Bay against Corona del Mar is just another game. And, with the Sailors having won six straight and 10 of the last 11 confrontations with their Back Bay brethren, it's becoming more and more difficult to argue the point. The two schools will meet for the 44th time in a nonleague clash Friday at 7 p.m. at Orange Coast College. And the Sailors (2-0), ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division VI, enter as the favorites yet again.
