A Huntington Beach woman was arrested early Wednesday on charges of driving under the influence after she crashed her SUV into a Costa Mesa apartment complex, Costa Mesa Police said. According to police, Dana Lynn Burkhouse, 22, was driving her 2005 Honda SUV at a high rate of speed just after midnight when she crashed through four fences and collided with two buildings and a parked car on Maple and Victoria streets. A 2-by-4 board smashed through the windshield of her vehicle and nearly struck her on the head, police said.

The 20-year-old Huntington Beach man whose truck crashed into and killed middle-school student Danny Oates last August has been charged with two felonies, authorities said. Danny’s father’s reaction: “Thank God.” The Orange County district attorney filed charges of vehicular manslaughter and felony driving under the influence against Jeffrey Francis Woods on April 30. Woods is accused of driving with gross negligence while under the influence of alcohol and drugs, authorities said.

A third victim in a Huntington Harbour boating crash last summer has filed a claim against the city citing negligence. James Geekie, 37, was riding in a 12-foot, inflatable Zodiac boat during high tide at 1 a.m. June 27. Shawn Wilson, 35, was also riding in the vessel as owner Caleb Steele, 30, drove. The boat crashed into the Gilbert Drive Bridge over Shelter Channel, and Wilson and Steele were knocked out of the boat and died. Geekie was knocked unconscious inside the boat and fractured his skull, according to the claim filed Dec. 22. Geekie is requesting an unknown amount of more than $10,000 for damages.

Woods is accused of driving with gross negligence while under the influence of alcohol and drugs, authorities said. On Aug. 29 last year, 14-year-old student Oates was biking on Indianapolis Avenue to Sowers Middle School to pick up his class schedule when Woods’ pickup truck suddenly swerved across the road, hit Oates, and crashed through a concrete wall, police said.

Man critically hurt after crash A Huntington Beach motorcyclist was critically injured after he crashed into two stopped cars on Monday, police said. The collision happened at about 3:45 p.m. at the intersection of 3rd Street and Park Avenue in Laguna Beach. Erich Mueller, 31, suffered multiple injuries after he crashed his 2001 Kawasaki Ninja into a 2000 Volkswagen Cabriolet, taking out one of the car's mirrors. His body then hit a 1998 Honda Civic, which was stopped in front of the Cabriolet, before he hit the pavement, police said.

An Anaheim police officer was sentenced to less than a year for crashing through a backyard fence in Huntington Beach while under the influence of four prescription drugs and also for two previous arrests for DUI. Kevin Noel Schlueter, 37, of Costa Mesa, was sentenced to 10 months in jail last week after pleading guilty to three counts of driving under the influence of drugs, all misdemeanors, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office....

A Huntington Beach woman is in good spirits despite being injured in a weekend biking accident at Crystal Cove State Park. Karen Joyce, 39, suffered head trauma, bruises and facial swelling after she hit a bump and crashed during a Saturday morning bike ride. However, she said she was in good shape Monday. “[I’m] improving. The swelling is going down and I’m taking on many interesting colors,” she said with a chuckle. A Costa Mesa police helicopter with two officers found Joyce in a remote area of the park, police said.

Two motorcyclists died after separate crashes in Huntington Beach this weekend. About 10:37 p.m. Sunday, a 42-year-old man lost control of his motorcycle. He and a female passenger were thrown from the vehicle near Springdale Street and McFadden Avenue, according to a police statement. The man has been identified as Travis Schumacher of Westminster, according to the Orange County coroner's office. Schumacher died after he hit a tree. The 55-year-old woman landed in a parking lot on the west side of Springdale and was taken to a local hospital, authorities said.

A woman in her 20s was killed Sunday in Garden Grove when the vehicle she was in hit a telephone pole and then a building, authorities said. Ariel Johnson, 21, of Lake Forest, was pronounced dead at the scene Sunday morning, after driver Shauna Ahyen, 21, of Fountain Valley, veered off the road, Garden Grove Police Lt. Jeff Nightengale said. Johnson was one of three occupants of a vehicle driven by Ahyen, who is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and DUI, Garden Grove police said in a statement.

The Orange County district attorney's office has declined to file charges against a man who allegedly displayed symptoms of alcohol consumption after his car overturned in Huntington Beach, injuring several passengers. Huntington Beach Police Lt. Mitch O'Brien said Midway City resident Fidel Barrera, 22, has been released from custody. But he could be charged later based on the pending results of the toxicology report. Police responded to the accident at 4:23 p.m. June 25 at Warner Avenue and Algonquin Street and found that the green 1999 Toyota 4-Runner had overturned several times, sustaining severe damage.

When Warner Avenue Baptist Church held its first service after June 5, it had an exceptional amount to be thankful for. That Tuesday, a pickup truck had barreled through the intersection at Warner and Gothard Street, flying into the 106-year-old church building and smashing part of its entryway. For a few hours, as police and fire officials stepped over broken glass and a tow truck gingerly removed the truck's remains from the premises, some onlookers might have guessed that Huntington Beach had lost another piece of its past.

The driver whose pickup truck smashed into a Huntington Beach church Tuesday morning has been cited on suspicion of driving under the influence, police said Friday. Lt. Mitch O'Brien identified the man as Robert McIntyre, 36. O'Brien said he did not know McIntyre's city of residence or his condition, but said he had been cited while at the hospital. McIntyre's truck slammed into the Warner Avenue Baptist Church, 7360 Warner Ave. The 106-year-old building predates the city's incorporation.

A driver suffered injuries this week when his pickup truck crashed into an unoccupied, 106-year-old Huntington Beach church, according to police and fire officials. The crash took place at Warner Avenue Baptist Church, 7360 Warner Ave., around 10:20 a.m. Tuesday, according to Huntington Beach Fire Capt. Jeff Lopez. The Urban Search and Rescue Team extricated the driver, a man, from the vehicle. He was taken to an area trauma center with significant injuries, according to Lopez.

Two men were killed and several people including an infant were injured in two separate Huntington Beach car crashes that happened within 24 hours of each other. Abraham Perez, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday after a collision at Bolsa Chica Street and Tasman Drive, Lt. Mitch O'Brien said. The driver of an orange 1973 Ford Bronco lost control, crossed over the center divider and hit Perez's silver 2000 Honda Civic. The 20-year-old Bronco driver, whose name has not been released, was in the car with her 7-month-old daughter.

An 81-year-old man died in a one-car crash Saturday morning in Huntington Beach, police announced Tuesday. Huntington Beach police and Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley firefighters responded about 11:53 a.m. Saturday to the accident on Patterson Lane north of Ellis Avenue. A gray 2001 Suzuki Esteem had been traveling north on Patterson when it left the roadway and hit some bushes, according to a police department release. The driver apparently suffered a medical issue that may have caused the crash, police said.

One person was transported to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange on Monday afternoon after a two-vehicle collision in Huntington Beach. One of the drivers was extricated by firefighters after the collision at about 3 p.m. on Edinger Avenue west of Gothard Street, officials said. The other driver was transported to Huntington Beach Hospital. The drivers' condition is not known, and the cause of the collision is unclear. Officials did not know the identify of the drivers or their gender.
