The Huntington Beach Independent is expanding into Seal Beach. Los Angeles Times subscribers who live in Seal Beach will receive the Independent with their papers every Thursday. The Independent will also be inserted into copies of The Times sold in newspaper racks and at retail locations, such as grocery stores and cafes. Since the Independent already circulates in neighboring Sunset Beach, as well as Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley, we found adding a neighboring beach town a natural fit for our newspaper group.

The Huntington Beach Independent's digital presence is constantly changing and improving, and we're excited to announce a new feature we hope will help our readers get the news they want faster and better. We're bringing back breaking news alerts, which will go out to subscribers via email. The alerts will quickly get out the basics of a breaking news story — such as a major car crash, fire or school lockdown — as soon as we become aware of it. We'll continue to update the story on our website as we get information, but the alerts will now be the first source of information.

Once again, Huntington Beach was splashed all over the news. And once again, it found itself wiping away more proverbial egg from its face. Little did Robert Rizzo imagine how different life would soon become last March when he was arrested after crashing into a mailbox in the 1900 block of Pine Street — not far from his home. He had a blood-alcohol level of .28, more than three times the legal limit, and as reported in this paper, "He was allegedly so intoxicated and stumbling around 'that the officer could not have him finish the field sobriety test,' said Susan Kang Schroeder, chief of staff at the Orange County district attorney's office.

On a recent weekend, my little family unit of three took a drive down Coast Highway. Traffic was light, the skies clear. We sailed past Huntington Harbour, Main Street, West Newport and toward our destination: Lido Isle. There’s a small waterfront playground on the island that is just perfect for little ones to play. We got out of the car and my 3-year-old daughter, Natalie, charged the swings, jungle gym and slides. Then it was off to the balance beam, with some hand-holding from Mom and Dad to keep her steady.
