A 14-year-old boy suspected of stabbing a duck was arrested on suspicion of cruelty to animals, police said. The boy was not identified because of the suspect's age, but police said he was petitioned in juvenile court. The duck, named Lucky by the mallard's caregivers, is healing as expected but remains in "stable but still guarded" condition, said Debbie McGuire, the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center's wildlife director. "Because it's a stab wound, we're leaving it as an open wound" and debriding it, McGuire said.

As thousands of rubber ducks splash into the water off the Huntington Beach Pier this weekend, the staff of nonprofit clinics for the uninsured will see a different sort of wave. The annual Duck-A-Thon, which will have its 15th run this weekend, raises about $200,000 per year for the Community Care Health Centers of Orange County, which began as the Huntington Beach Community Clinic and became the county's largest network of clinics for the uninsured. That's a major figure for an organization that raises $2 to $3 million each year.

"People who might not have heard it in the past may be hearing it now for the first time," city spokeswoman Laurie Payne said of the sound of the beefed-up sirens. All fire stations in the city are equipped with the sirens, which are designed to warn residents of impending disasters. Examples would include hazardous chemical spills, tsunamis or a collapse of the Prado Dam on the Santa Ana River.
