The Estancia High football team saw its struggles with the running game go from bad to worse Friday night as host Buena Park held the Eagles to minus-46 yards rushing in a 17-8 Coyotes victory. The Eagles did manage 82 passing yards, but managed its only touchdown when Matt Redding stripped the ball from a Buena Park running back and returned the fumble 20 yards for with 7:19 left in the game. "We didn't come to play football tonight," said Estancia Coach Brian Barnes, whose team fell to 0-3 and now has minus-24 yards rushing this season.

Coach Brian Barnes said his Estancia High football players are tired of waiting for their first victory of the season. Apparently, Buena Park, which plays host to the nonleague clash with the Eagles Friday at 7, reached that point last week. The Coyotes ended their 15-game losing streak with a 7-6 double-overtime triumph over Century in their opener Friday night. Though the Estancia losing streak spans only the first two games of this season, Barnes believes it needs to be brought to a halt.

Estancia High's boys water polo team will have a temporary home this season, but Coach John Carpenter said relationships built in four years should provide the needed stability for the Eagles to reach the postseason. Carpenter, entering his 26th year at the helm, believes this year's team, which features five returners among an eight-player squad, including four starters, has the ability to reach the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs. The Eagles, who finished 9-11 last season, must navigate through an entire season on the road, though the schedule says otherwise.

First-year Estancia High coach Brian Barnes, and many of his players, learned much from their varsity football debut last week. But they will have to learn about tonight's opponent, Huntington Park from the CIF Los Angeles City Section, as the game unfolds. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Orange Coast College. "I haven't heard anything about them," Barnes said of the Spartans, who are opening their season after a 9-2 campaign in 2004 that included an Eastern League championship.

Although Estancia High lost four players for the upcoming girls volleyball season, more importantly, it gained needed experience. Juniors Stacie Watson, a setter, and Jaye Hellmich, a middle blocker, have both been varsity players since they were freshman, and plan to play a key part in the adjustment process. "They both have two years under their belt," said Coach Jim Huffman. "They're older, they're stronger and they're smarter. They have helped in bringing the girls up and in mentoring.

It took a stretch of 137 seconds at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second to eliminate much of the suspense over the outcome of the season-opening nonleague football game between visiting Corona del Mar High and Estancia Friday night. But by then, another uncertainty was all but gone for the Sea Kings, who earned a 26-6 victory before 900 spectators at Orange Coast College. Senior Matt Loyd, who did not touch the ball on offense last season, established himself as a productive tailback by rolling up 100 rushing yards on 16 carries by halftime.

Both coaches and their players are relieved to have the opportunity to face an opponent with different colored jerseys. But both Corona del Mar High and Estancia enter Friday's 7 p.m. nonleague football opener at Orange Coast College with a thematic color in common: Green. Both teams have four returning starters and both lack experience and proven production at the offensive skill positions.
