Matt Molino scored 16 points and handed out 10 assists Sunday to help lead the West Huntington Beach boys 8th-grade All-Net basketball team to a 38-26 victory over El Modena in National Junior Basketball action. West Huntington Beach also received nine points and 10 rebounds from Nick Kosearas and 10 points from Brandon O'Bryan. Defensively, David Grantham and Courtney Coleman combined for 12 blocked shots and 20 rebounds. In other games: GIRLS 7TH-GRADE ALL-NET DIVISION East HB 28, Villa Park 27 The East Huntington Beach Mercury closed the game with an 11-0 run to pull out the one point victory.

Hoops tournament action continues today at both Ocean View High and Fountain Valley High. In boys? basketball, the 37th annual Tournament of Champions at Ocean View, which began Monday, features games today and Friday and concludes with championship-round play Saturday. Twenty-three teams are vying for the title, including last year?s tournament winner, Westchester (Los Angeles). Also competing are nationally ranked teams Etiwanda and St. Mary?s of Arizona and top California teams in Ocean View, Long Beach Poly, Clovis West, Garces, Long Beach Jordan, Rancho Verde, Serra and West Valley.

Top girls' high school teams tip off at local holiday event.Girls' prep basketball holiday action will take place at two local schools beginning Tuesday with the tipoff of the 2005 Larry Doyle Orange County Championships. The tournament, featuring 16 teams, is hosted by Edison and Marina high schools. The first two days of action, Dec. 27 and Dec. 28, will be played at Edison. The tournament, named after the late Marina athletic director, shifts to Marina for games on Dec. 29 and Dec. 30. The championship game is set for 8 p.m. Dec. 30. Thirteen of the participating teams are from Orange County: Edison, Marina, Capistrano Valley, Aliso Niguel, El Modena, Esperanza, Rosary, San Clemente, Santa Margarita, Pacifica, Magnolia and Valencia of Placentia.

Five members of the Huntington Beach High boys' soccer team, have been named to the 2006-07 All-Amateur Athletic Foundation's Southern Section Division II team. Senior defender John Shonjo was the lone Oiler named to the first team. Senior defenders Travis Geery and Dirk Petersen were selected second-team and senior forward Kyle McAthy and senior goalie Geo Hernandez both were third-team picks. The various division teams were selected by the Southern California Soccer Coaches Assn.

The teams in this year?s event, which runs through Dec. 29, are Edison, Marina, Esperanza, Foothill, Santa Margarita, San Clemente, Capistrano Valley, El Dorado, Norco, JW North, Mira Costa, Martin Luther King, Troy, Pacifica and El Modena. Following opening-round play on Dec. 26, championship and consolation bracket play continues Dec. 27 and Dec. 28. On Dec. 29, the final day of the tournament, the fifth-place game will start at 5 p.m. followed at 6:30 p.m. with the third-place game.

Ocean View High rallies to defeat El Modena, 47-43, in girls' basketball.The Ocean View High girls' basketball team won the title at its own event, the first Ocean View Tournament, by rallying past El Modena, 47-43, in the championship game. The Seahawks outscored the Vanguards, 16-8, in the fourth quarter to win the game. DJ Butler scored 14 points for Ocean View. Kaitlin Potter, who had 12 rebounds to go along with six points, was named MVP of the tournament. In other girls' basketball action, Edison headed into the Christmas break with a 50-32 victory over Centennial.

The Estancia High boys and girls cross country teams came out on top in a Golden West League tri-meet also involving Costa Mesa and Ocean View Thursday at Fairview Park. Hector Gomez led the Estancia boys, finishing in 16 minutes, 40 seconds, while C.J. Buchman (16:56), Enrique Vivar (17:38) Jose Garcia (17:55) and Andy Navarette (18:15) scored for the Eagles. Sydney Barloon led the Eagles' girls in 20:11, while Paula Negrette (21:56), Magali Onofre (22:26)

Kicking off the start of its own Tournament of Champions on Monday, Ocean View jumped out to a big lead on Lakewood, withstood a second-half run by the Lancers and then went on to post a 69-56 win in boys’ basketball action. It was the opening game of the 20th annual tournament, which continues today and Friday, and concludes with championship-round action Saturday. Seahawks senior guard/forward Takeshi Clifford took over the first-half scoring, where he produced all of his game-high 21 points.
