Angelique Flores FOUNTAIN VALLEY -- The community at Fountain Valley High School has formed a task force to help direct the fate of programs held in Building No. 300. The 30-year-old building is not equipped with earthquake protections and doesn't meet modern safety codes, and Huntington Beach Union High School District officials want to demolish it before it becomes unsafe. The district, however, has only enough money to replace the 55,000-square-foot building with one about half the size.

Angelique Flores FOUNTAIN VALLEY -- A plan to demolish the No. 300 building at Fountain Valley High School and replace it with one half its size has parents and school officials upset. The ground beneath the building's foundation is settling, adding stress to the columns and beams, officials said. Huntington Beach Union High School District officials want to raze the building before it becomes unsafe. Because the price to repair the building -- $9 million -- is about 80% of the cost to rebuild -- $13 million -- the district wants to tear it down and start from scratch, said Ed Baker, the district's assistant superintendent of facilities.

There is a development going on that should be the concern of parents in the Fountain Valley-Huntington Beach area. I'm speaking of the saga of Building C at Fountain Valley High School. During the bond campaign last year, the Huntington Beach Union High School District made much ado about the condition of Building C. Rebuffed on the ballot, it went after state funds to raze and replace Building C. Cafeteria employees have been given notice, but no one seems to know much else.

Connie Mayhugh stepped into her first principal's position July 3, succeeding Gary Ernst, who retired at the end of the school year. The 42-year-old Tustin resident has been in education for 11 years, five of which she spent teaching.
