The murder and conspiracy trial of Rachael Mullenix nearly flew off the rails Monday afternoon, before the judge rejected a request for a mistrial by the defense and allowed the case to continue. It all began as prosecutor Sonia Balleste cross-examined defense witness Veronica Thomas, a psychologist hired to evaluate Mullenix. In the PowerPoint presentation she used to illustrate her questions about the defendant’s psychology, Balleste included an image of a poem written by Mullenix, titled “Female Player.

If the first day of the Rachael Mullenix murder trial was full of allegations against the defendant, the second day’s accusations were against her slain mother. The trial of Mullenix on charges of conspiring with her boyfriend in 2006 to murder her mother, Barbara Mullenix, continued Thursday with testimony from Bruce Mullenix, Rachael’s father. Bruce Mullenix, who was divorced from Barbara but let them both live in his Huntington Beach condo, told jurors his slain ex-wife made threats and acted abusive when she’d had too much to drink.

Depending on whether you listened to the prosecution or defense, Rachael Mullenix is either a manipulative killer and a liar who used her boyfriend to help her knock off her mom, or she is the abused victim of her violent beau and only helped him cover up a murder because she didn’t know how else to cope with a shocking act. That’s what jurors now have to decide, as they went into deliberation Monday afternoon in search of a verdict....

Rachael Mullenix doesn’t remember seeing a butter knife plunged into her mother’s eye, or where she and her then-boyfriend Ian Allen drove to dump the body, or changing out of bloody clothes, she told jurors during cross-examination by the prosecution Thursday. “This is something I don’t want to remember,” Mullenix said of the sight of her mother’s mutilated body. “I don’t want to remember my mother like this. I’m sure I saw it there, but there’s things you just don’t want to remember and you try hard to forget them.

As jurors deliberate whether 23-year-old Ian Allen is guilty of the 2006 murder of his former girlfriend’s mother, Barbara Mullenix, in their Huntington Beach condo, Allen’s guilt wasn’t the only question they were asked to grapple with. Both prosecution and defense attorneys had to deal with the question of Rachael Mullenix, also. The defense and prosecution made their closing statements Monday to jurors, battling over whether Allen was an active participant in the brutal stabbing or just someone who saw an unspeakable crime and tried to help her cover it up. Jurors then began deliberating at the end of the day, and will meet until they reach a verdict.

A Huntington Beach man was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison Friday for helping kill his then-girlfriend’s mother in 2006 and dumping her body into Newport Harbor. Ian Allen, 23, was given the same sentence as Rachael Mullenix, 19, who was his girlfriend at the time and was convicted of the killing in July. On Sept. 23, 2006, Allen and Mullenix killed Barbara Mullenix, Rachael’s mother, because she disapproved of their relationship. Barbara Mullenix was stabbed more than 50 times with at least two knives, expert witnesses testified.

Ian Westleigh Allen, 23, has been found guilty of first degree murder for stabbing to death his former girlfriend’s mother, Barbara Mullenix, in the family’s Huntington Beach condo in 2006. The prosecution originally considered giving Allen a sentencing enhancement for personal use of a deadly weapon -- in this case, one or more knives, but declined to pursue it. Allen faces 25 years to life in prison, and will be sentenced Nov. 14. Rachael Scarlett Mullenix, the victim’s daughter and Allen’s 19-year-old former girlfriend, was already convicted of first degree murder for the same crime in July.
